New Delhi, Aug 27: Yamaha is set to launch its much-awaited R2 motorcycle in India on August 27, marking the brand's entry into a new space in the entry-level supersport segment.
The fully faired motorcycle is expected to be positioned above the popular R15 and offer buyers a more powerful option without moving into the considerably costlier 300cc-plus category. Yamaha has already begun accepting pre-bookings and released teasers offering glimpses of the new R-series motorcycle.
The final price, specifications and complete feature list are expected to be announced at the launch. The R2 is tipped to be priced between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 2.20 lakh, ex-showroom, placing it close to motorcycles such as the KTM RC 200.
Yamaha has opened pre-bookings for Rs 10,000. The amount is refundable and will be adjusted against the final purchase price, while customers who cancel are expected to have the refund process begin from September 5. Those who pre-booked are also expected to receive priority deliveries.
The R2 is expected to use a liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with a displacement of around 200cc to 220cc and could produce about 25 bhp. However, these figures remain unconfirmed until Yamaha officially reveals the specifications.
Yamaha is also expected to focus on keeping the motorcycle lightweight, which could give it an advantage in terms of handling and power-to-weight ratio against rivals such as the KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR.
In terms of styling, the R2 is expected to carry the aggressive design language associated with Yamaha's R-series. It is likely to feature a fully faired body, clip-on handlebars and a sporty riding position, while drawing design cues from the company's larger supersport motorcycles.
The motorcycle could also receive a full-TFT instrument cluster, traction control, ABS, shift indicators and an updated Y-Connect smartphone connectivity system. Features such as riding modes, a quickshifter and cruise control have also been speculated, though Yamaha has not confirmed them.
The R2 is not expected to replace the R15 completely. Instead, it is likely to serve as an upgrade for riders seeking more performance, with the R15 continuing to occupy the lower end of Yamaha's R-series range.
The motorcycle's key rivals are expected to include the KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR. Yamaha will look to attract buyers with its R-series styling, expected lightweight construction and high-revving performance.
The launch of the R2 could strengthen Yamaha's presence in India's affordable performance motorcycle market, particularly if the company manages to strike the right balance between price, performance, features and weight.
