Mangaluru: Thumbay dam water level drops, tanker deliveries increase

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Apr 6: Despite continuous water supply efforts, many parts of the city are experiencing water scarcity, leading to an increase in water tanker deliveries.

On Friday, the water level in Thumbay dam dropped to 5.07 meters, while in AMR dam, it depleted to 17.10 meters. To maintain water levels, pumping from Harekala dam to Thumbay dam is ongoing, yet the daily decline remains a concern.

Daily, 155 MLD of water is lifted from Thumbay dam to supply drinking water to the city, with current reserves only lasting for 45 days. The Municipal Corporation is considering water rationing for April.

Areas within MCC limits that don't receive Thumbay dam water are supplied with tanker water, with nearly 70 tankers dispatched daily. In rural Ullal, water scarcity persists in places like Thokottu, Balepuni, Konaje, Naringana, Pajeeru, Manjanady, and Innoli gram panchayat limits. Nine tankers make approximately 30 trips per day to supply water to these areas. Additionally, water is supplied to 12 city wards, Ullal, Kotekar, and Someshwar through 10 water tankers, making 62 trips.

Health department must check 24×7 hours about the purity of the drinking water. But when I see the water tanker condition, tottaly rusted the tank, looks not to use for toilets also. Still one and half months we have this water shortage. Administration must please take care.

Nobody knows the condition of the inside surface of the tankers and whether they have been used to ferry chemicals or other dangerous stuff; also the source of water; it would be prudent to use this water for cleaning and sundry purposes but not at all for drinking!!

Radial wells are cheaper to construct and maintain, I have written about this earlier also.Radial wells or French wells in the river bed can easily solve the drinking water problem here. In Ahmedabad before Narmada dam , the river Sabarmati used to be totally dry by November, ( the toal rainfall used to be only 12 to 20 inches there compared to 120 inches here)but there was no shortage of drinking water for a population of over 80 lakhs. Mangalore has the luxury of 2 rivers and a population of around 6 lakhs, why not have French wells here, it would be a long term solution, ( but no 40% so no one interested )..

Dear Monty; these chaps working in the irrigation and water supply department may not even have heard of "radial wells" as yet.... BTW; the river Swarna was found to have extremely high lead content (probably second highest in the country), and you would know better how dangerous and widespread damage it causes to those who accumulate excess lead in their systems... no doubt kidney failure has become endemic in DK; borewell water too contains heavy metals and fluoride, which if consumed without treatment is very toxic to life.. . cutting the story short... for obvious reasons 😌😌🙏🙏

If politician and political parties can spend in cores to fight an election and bribe MP / MLA , the party comes to power cannot think of a desalination plant in Mangalore and good sewerage recycling plant so that recycled water can be used for gardening and for Flushing purpose in the apartments. But they would not do it........

Environmentalists and like minded people have been ringing the warning bells since last couple of years.... even though climate change is a worldwide phenomenon, it has considerably exacerbated the drought conditions due to man's unending greed, rampant destruction of reserved forests in the virgin Western Ghats, cutting hills for building homestays, indiscriminate drilling of borewells for irrigation of areca plantation (by converting conventional paddy fields); situation is so bad that wild jumbos and leopards have started desperately moving inside busy towns in search of water and food, just a matter of time they find their way to the smart city.... but tanker water suppliers might be a very happy lot... laughing their way to the banks... 😣🙏

Please please do something about water at least from now on. Make ponds near thumbay and fill sea water at least. Desalination unit installation is emergency requirement

@Eva; only countries earning petro dollars can afford desalination plants, and that is not the solution for us... I am repeatedly saying at the cost of getting abused, that most people having access to water as of now are sleeping😴.... busy organising and attending religious, political and social functions... oblivious of the gravity of the situation.. .. thinking that some powerful ritual, homas, prayers to powerful Gods, spirits etc etc would come to their aid.... some, flush with money, say I have the capacity to drill 10 borewells etc etc... story goes on and on... let's hope that Lord Varuna will show his mercy and give bountiful rains very soon... ..
