CBCI advises Catholic schools against imposing Christian traditions

Daijiworld Media Network – New Delhi

New Delhi, Apr 5: The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), representing the Catholic community in India, has issued suggestions for educational institutions under its jurisdiction to address emerging challenges in the country's socio-cultural, religious, and political landscape.

These suggestions include respecting all faiths and traditions, avoiding imposition of Christian traditions on students of other religions, having students recite the Preamble to the Constitution during morning assembly, and establishing an ‘inter-religious prayer room’ on school premises.

Issued by the CBCI’s office for education and culture, these guidelines come in response to recent incidents of attacks and protests against Christian-run educational institutions. Notably, there have been protests regarding restrictions on religious symbols and attire in schools.

In addition to displaying the Preamble to the Constitution and promoting religious and cultural sensitivity among students and staff, the guidelines advocate for training on inclusive practices to foster a harmonious environment in schools.

Furthermore, the CBCI recommends displaying photos of prominent Indian figures and suggests the creation of an inter-religious prayer room or Sarvadharma Prarthanalay within educational institutions.

Need for such an advisory never arose since the British left the country. Then why now? Did the Christian educational institutions err somewhere during the last 75 years? Various Christian institutions since their inception during the British era had been promoting peace and communal harmony in the country. It’s high time an organization like CBCI should stand up against the unwarranted pressures and threats from extremist fanatical forces and ensure that this nation does not turn into another Pakistan.

One thing we have to accept.Whatever you do or whenever it is,when try to do something or other ,there will be someone who dances out of line. Then it takes a different meaning when try to explain it why and what.Since we are from different castes ,religion ,and beliefs.Whether in Govt schools ,or religious schools hospitals.churches.If we put loudspeaker loud for prayers other religion is not amused.Best is try to get on with the flow. When doesnt Pass,go home instead of try to explain and explain four times, fifth time you yourself will fall dead.

For centuries Christian institutions imparted education without any discrimination and none had any problems. Now all of a sudden all these nonsense developments about forcing Christian traditions .......all for the sake of power. However, CBCI is just a toothless tiger when it comes to protecting Christians.

The practice of conducting prayers in all schools and colleges should cease. Instead, students should take an oath on values such as integrity, sincerity, cleanliness, and adherence to the law etc.. knock knock gautham Das

The recitation of the prayer "Our Father" by the honorable CJI before the SC bar association without any inhibition portrays his true secular nature and that the particular morning prayer is an Universal Prayer to the Creator, and nobody should have any objections to it! I still remember, in the co-ed English medium Catholic Missionary School where I studied we used to sing the very popular hindi hymn "Humko Man Ki Shakti Dena" every morning during assembly; all denominations irrespective of caste or creed of children sang it enthusiastically in chorus and started our day; none had any issues as the atmosphere at that time was, singular,100% Indian, all living in amity and camaraderie unlike the miserable😔 mess we are in today..... I can go on and on.... feel sad that we have to see such a day wherein radical thoughts are fed into the minds of tender minds by parents who seem to have been mesmerized by the hysteria propagated by corrupt minds... hoping that better sense will prevail atleast among the educated.. .parents 🤔🙏🙏

Catholic educational institutions have never forced their traditions, culture and religious on non-Catholic students or people. Non-Catholic student had separate classes of moral science during catechism of catholic students. This is unwarranted and unnecessary rule but won’t hurt anyway.

@Myna, excellent unbiased and rational thoughts and suggestions! However in the following sentence::: "These suggestions include respecting all faiths and traditions, avoiding imposition of Christian traditions on students of other religions, having students recite the Preamble to the Constitution during morning assembly, and establishing an ‘inter-religious prayer room’ on school premises."::: Certain phrases like "imposing Christian traditions" was unwarranted as I, personally, don't think that this has ever been resorted to by any Catholic school! However; as you said, a time may come when the people who did great sacrifices for the nation as we had learnt in school and called martyrs could be replaced by some new faces/names... wouldn't like to elaborate on that.... time will tell.... 😌🙏🙏

CBCI ought to have initiated counselling sessions in the institutions to help children cope with stress levels at home and in society. There is nothing wrong with having moral education for the students without imposing any religious teaching on the non-Christian students. These sessions have gone a long way to mould the students' character, respect every religion and develop a secular attitude as they grow up. I recall the present CJI reciting the 'Our Father' recently taught to him in school during the Christmas celebration at the SC Bar Association program. Why is the CBCI shying away from this? The suggestion to read the Preamble of the Constitution is welcome. The Preamble should be framed and displayed in every classroom and corridor as a reminder to our students to adhere to as citizens of our country. The suggestion to display pictures of prominent Indian figures should have been specific. There will be a day when few unscrupulous elements want Nathuram Godse's picture displayed in Christian institutions. CBCI should apply its mind and be specific in giving instructions.
