Udupi, Apr 1: Leopards have been spotted roaming around the Saralebettu area near Manipal during the night time for several days.

In a recent incident, a leopard preyed on two hens from a coop at the residence of Sunita D’Souza near Ram Mandir. The act of the leopard was captured on CCTV footage from the house.

The menace of leopards is escalating in areas including Saralebettu Kodi, End Point, Kelaparkala, Sannakibettu, and Parkala Gatson vicinity. Local residents report sightings of two to three leopards roaming regularly during the night.

Ganesh Raj Saralebettu mentioned that despite informing the forest department about the presence of the leopard in Kelaparkala, they were unable to trap it in a cage.

Eighty years ago before Mannupalla became Manipal, Leopards used to roam freely in Mannupalla gudde, Kunjibettu, Parkala and surrounding areas. People coming from Parkala to Udupi town avoided crossing present day Manipal after 4 p.m. Manipal was previously forest land with trees, shrubs etc land mostly owned by Ashta matha's of Udupi. Cows from Krishna matha used to graze during the day and return in the evening. Ofcourse now Manipal has become city.

No wonder there is a spot named Tiger circle in Manipal. They (the leopards) are the true owners of the place. Humans have just destructed their ecosystem and now we call it a menace!!!

As the heat wave and water scarcity tightens it's grip, one should not be surprised if all types of wild animals including snakes come out of their habitats close to humans

Dont blame the wild animals. These poor animals are not over populated, they are wandering around for food. Their habitat is consistantly under threat across the country, as forest and tribal areas are handed over to businessmen, in recent years.
