Mangaluru: St Gerosa School suspends teacher over alleged hurting of religious sentiment

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Feb 12: In a recent development, the St Gerosa English Higher Primary School in Jeppu has taken swift action by suspending a teacher accused of hurting particular religious sentiments among her students.

In an official communication addressed to the parents, the school's management emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive relationship and ensuring uninterrupted academic studies. To address the incident, the accused teacher has been immediately removed from the institution, and a replacement teacher will be appointed promptly.

This decision aims to facilitate a thorough and unbiased inquiry into the matter by the concerned District authorities, with the assurance of full cooperation from the school management. The school pledges to abide by the results of the inquiry and calls for equal cooperation from all parents during this critical juncture in the academic year.

The management has stated, "St Gerosa School, with a 60-year history, has not witnessed such an incident before. The institution is committed to upholding constitutional values, treating all faiths and communities with equality. Despite the temporary mistrust resulting from this unfortunate incident, the school is optimistic that the decisive measures taken, coupled with active cooperation from parents, will contribute to rebuilding trust and fostering a brighter future for all students."

For all educated, uneducated and so called intelligent people of Mangaluru, here is a poem "Work is worship" by Rabindranath Tagore. Now interpret the way you want! Leave this chanting and singing and telling of beads! Whom dost thou worship in this lonely dark corner of a temple with doors all shut? Open thine eyes and see thy God is not before thee! He is there where the tiller is tilling the hard ground and where the path-maker is breaking stones. He is with them in sun and in shower, and his garment is covered with dust. Put off thy holy mantle and even like him come down on the dusty soil! Deliverance? Where is this deliverance to be found? Our master himself has joyfully taken upon him the bonds of creation; he is bound with us all for ever. Come out of thy meditation and leave aside thy flowers and incense What harm is there if thy clothes become tattered and stained? Meet him and stand by him in toil and in sweat of thy brow.

Dear readers, I want to clarify to the "Scientific tempered" people like Mr.Stephen who allegedly spoke about Pouring milk and or egg to Naga. There is a scientific explanation. Our ancestors who were agriculturists/ farmers brought this tradition to safeguard them and their workers. During the breeding season, female snakes release pheromones into the air to attract mates. The males detect the alluring scent. The NAGA PANCHAMI falls usually in the months of July or August- the start of Agricultural season. Though snakes don't drink the milk poured or the broken eggs that are poured, the smell reduces the scent of pheromones hence limits the breeding. And as some of us know snakes don't bite or attack humans unless they or their off springs are in danger. So our ancestors controlled the breeding season of snakes by pouring milk and egg to snakes. Likewise I feel many of the tradition that our ancestors followed which we now call MOODA NAMBIKE has scientific backing. I don't know about rest of India but our Tulunadu has such rich traditions hence simply ridiculing them is WRONG. M

It is a lesson to be learnt for all Christian institutes. Educational institutions should not be run as business houses. Out of greed they admit any number of students even though it will not benefit their own community. In most cases the funds for the operation and maintenance of Christian schools is borne by Christians only. It is high time to start shutting down all such Christian institutions which are not benefitting their own people.

It looks like the school management has bowed down before the immense political pressure from both MLA's and some corporators, who left no stone unturned to their advantage as this is a crucial election year. The students behave rudely at their instigation, as can be seen in many videos under circulation, as the behaviour looks like street goons. This shows that our political level has gone down so low, which is a disgrace to the electorate. What are the lessons we are teaching our blooming buds? I feel very sad for the school and the children. The Parents too are to be blamed as they could have nipped this in the bud by complaining to the school directly instead of taking it to the politicians. It is a street justice given which is uncalled for in a democratic nation where we have law and justice organs to deal with such problems.

When they want admission, they want to send their children to Christian institutions. If there is a wrong done it should be condemned. Did the parent not find it necessary to first bring this up with the school management before getting our useless sanghi politicians involved. These parents always have the choice of putting their children in Hindu RSS promoted schools but don't want to since they can't afford the fees there. The jobless uneducated politicians are waiting for the slightest opportunity to get brownie points with elections around the corner. Do they show the same enthusiasm when fighting for real people issues. Even though Christians contribute less than 2% of the population, it is the Christian institutions which have rendered yoemen services which the others can only dream of.. Let the incident be investigated and then take corrective actions. So stop being Hypocrites and demeaning such institutions , inspite of all the atrocities being committed everyday in this country.

I watched the video reporting St. Jerosa School teacher allegedly downgrading the particular religion in a classroom. Teachers sometimes have to explain the Divine theory objectively and without bias. Students should learn what is atheism too. It is a learning process. The Teacher should handle the conversations about religion with care. Yes, mistake do happen. It’s crucial for public figures like MLAs to address such issues responsibly and constructively. Reacting with aggression or uncultured behavior can escalate tension. I have seen the MLA guy was shouting fanatically as if he owns the religion. Karl Marx said, "Religion is opium for people". Looks like somebody had little too much of opium this morning!

All teachers make mistakes and it can be corrected with simple meeting with the management without dragging children to the confrontation. What lesson we are teaching to children? They will revolt against the parents too. Moral and discipline are important than the education. This issue could have resolved long back. The teacher in question should have remembered that Christians in Roman Catholic churches have idols of not just Jesus and mother Mary, but also of various other saints which is revered. Especially as a nun she must have shown restraint and should not have gotten carried away. He belief should be kept to herself and she and all of us should show respect to each other's beliefs.

Innocent minds of youngsters are poisoned after 2014. If the student is hurt about his or her relationship in school, should leave the school and to a school run by his / her liking. Here it is making a mountain our of a molehill.

Very good move from school management. When I was also iin school we faced many taunts for being from a particular religion. Sadly, even now I see the situation not improved. This kind of hatred is also getting people lynched in many parts of the country. Just that such outrage shud not be selective.

School has set a wrong precedent for all d Christians institutions. Rest assured, all trivial issues wil b magnified in coming days. V shld make an attempt to prosecute d MLA for his loose talk about Christian schools.
