Mangaluru, Aug 12: Natural technology is being opted for permanent solution of sea erosion, which used to gobble crore of rupees of the Karnataka government.

A team of forest, biology, ports and environmental experts has found that natural plant species that are seen at the beaches can be effectively used as protective cover against sea erosion.

If the state and union governments agree, then this project will be implemented throughout 320 km long coastal region of Karnataka.

Many technologies like break water, sea roof and geo textiles were used to prevent sea erosion. But none of them was effective in preventing the calamity.

The team of experts has found that the plant species that are grown on beaches of sea can be used as protective wall against violent sea.

The plant species are grown at Tannirbhavi and Bengre areas. No sea erosion is noticed in the last two years in the beach areas here. The state government released Rs 30 lac for the project. Using this fund, natural plant species were grown on five hectare area of Bengre and Tannirbhavi.

Four zones of plants are grown on beach to prevent sea erosion using this technology. In the first line, iphomia and stynyflex are grown. In the second scayaviola, pramna, cliro and vitexdendrum are grown. The third zone will consist of noni, bugari, callofillum. The last zone will have alvania, cachurin and paicus plants.

Forest department is growing these plant species in its nurseries. According to Dr Dinesh Kumar, deputy conservator of forest of Mangaluru, this technology is a role model for the whole country and used effectively to prevent sea erosion.

Technology is already proven and is in practice most parts of the world including some shores in India... Political will and sincerity in construction are lacking... We need solid revetment at the most vulnerable wave pressure points... This needs thorough scientific study to identify such strips of shores... When we are reinforcing such shores against forced ingress we must allow the counter force to taper down by artificially providing extra sea space nearby...
