Kasargod, May 29: The Manjeshwar station police have apprehended a resident of Uppala who had escaped from police custody while being escorted to court 25 years ago.

The arrested individual is Usman Puyakkare (56), a resident of Uppala Mani Munda. He was accused of snatching a gold ornament from a woman's neck while she was walking at the Taliparamba market 25 years ago. At that time, he was arrested but managed to assault the police and flee while being taken to court. Despite extensive searches conducted in Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, the police were unable to locate him, leading to the suspension of the investigations.

However, the Kannur Crime Branch Police recently gathered information on the absconding suspect and resumed their investigations. They sought the assistance of the Manjeshwar police in apprehending Usman. Acting on specific information, he was arrested from a house in Manjeshwar Kedambadi.

It has been revealed that Usman had been working at hotels in Kerala and Karnataka. The police discovered that he had been employed at a hotel near Uppala a few months ago. Subsequently, the Manjeshwar police handed him over to the Taliparamba station police.

Good job by police investigators. These gold snatchers must be handed over to the public for justice and not to the Indian legal system which gives them free food and free bed and a coordinated chance of absconding. Instead of using handcuffs, the police must adopt to using cuffs on the feet with a a small steel chain that will negate the chances of running away and escaping!
