Shortage of drinking water - College students face problems in Mangaluru, Udupi

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, May 6: Drinking water scarcity is bothering many parts of twin districts. College students are the worst affected.

Most of the colleges are holding classes in both districts and many of them are having drinking water shortages. The plight of colleges with hostels is pathetic.

In some colleges, online classes have started. Others have curtailed their timings from 9 am to 4 pm to 9 am to 1 pm only.

As water supply was stopped three days ago in Mangaluru, online classes were held for students of Mangaluru University. Later water was brought in tankers and classes began.

In some colleges, students are instructed to bring their own drinking water. Recently, a college in Mangaluru, which has around 1000 students declared a holiday due to no water.

Social worker Venu Sharma says, “Mercury is soaring. It is difficult to even sit at home itself. In this hot weather, colleges are conducting classes. That too, water scarcity is making the life of students difficult. I really do not know the necessity of holding classes during the hot summer months. The district administration should take some immediate action considering the health of the students.”

The schools, colleges & other educational institutions should ensure that allexams are over before the peak summer sets in. As for the water shortage, it is high time that man-made lakes are made or we need to resort to desalination plants.

Despite disapproval by the Green Tribunal and repeated warnings by environmentalists these unscrupulous politicians went ahead with the Yettinahole project. Both VM and DVS are directly responsible for the drying of Nethravati River. This is the result of diverting a naturally flowing river in addition to destroying thousands of acres of forests. Till date not a mug of water has reached the drought prone areas of Chikkaballapur. On the contrary it created drought like situation in our region. As predicted this huge money minting project led to natural disaster.

Imagine; another one month left for the southwest monsoon to set in and entire DK is struggling for drinking water! Just think 🤔 what is the future of this City with the acute climate change and El nino effect and the humongous uncontrolled increase in residential educational institutions, coaching classes etc, compounding the permanent smothering of the Netravathi water supply!!

The issue of acute drinking 🚰 water problem is only going to escalate in the future, and there seems to be no solution after destruction of the main source, Netravathi; other than the administration going in for more and more borewells, which will be counterproductive as the ground water level has gone down considerably due to rampant uncontrolled boring of wells and concretization in and around the city sides! Massive forest 🔥 in the Western ghats has added fuel to the fire! The very high concentration of big residential educational institutions in such a small area has increased tremendously increased the demand for potable water! Most open wells in the city are reportedly contaminated with sewage water! Tanker water is mostly unsuitable for consumption as it is contaminated with heavy metals! It's high time multistoried building construction for any purposes is halted or the day of barenness is not far off! Country side water guzzling areca plantations have taken the water level to very low levels!

Now first time voters who are just waiting to vote on the tenth of this month know whom to vote. Now you know who is responsible for the pathetic condition in your respected college's. The double engine government cannot solve the problem you all are facing. The first time voters should know that the double engine government is a trouble engine government. The main culprit is the visitor from the North.
