Mangaluru: Kavoor pond goes dry, locals unhappy with Smart City project works

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Apr 16: Kavoor pond, which was developed at a cost of Rs 8.5 crore under the Smart City project, has gone completely dry.

Fish, frogs and tortoises have all died. This is the first time in many years that the pond has gone dry in the month of April itself.

A walking track has been built around the lake. There are stone benches for joggers and walkers to sit and relax. Even during the night, walking is allowed as the facility is floodlit. However, as the pond in the centre was not developed properly, it has gone dry. The park looks beautiful only when the pond is full of water.

During the Smart City project work, drainage water which used to flow into the pond from nearby apartment buildings and houses has  stopped. In earlier years as the sewage water used to flow into the pond, it used to look full. Locals are unhappy as the pond has not been developed properly during the Smart City project work. Even if five feet of silt was removed from the pond, there would have been sufficient water to supply to the whole village of Kavoor.

Maintenance of work that is done on the pond is of prime importance. It is not being taken care of properly. Lights should be replaced if they are not working. Interlocks should be refixed if they come off the ground. Iron fences need to be painted. Otherwise in another year, the park is likely to look desolated.

I wish to know out of these 8.5 crores ,really how many crores were used to maintain or develope that time.Sunned to hear sewage water was flowing into this lake ´?Shame .Around the lake there are no trees or greenary around. No wonder when open ,and no shadows around will dry up soon in the hot sun.Or they should arrange for some water to flow continuesly into the lake.Fountains and greenery is important to survive the fishes and frogs in it.some plants inside like seeroses will bring back the greenery. It is important for fishes and other see creatures.

I have been to this place before development and even after all the works did under smart City. The lake was filled with silt and weeds. It used to smell real bad and though it was the lake of the temple there was no sanitation. It was like dump yard for sewage water and garbage. What has changed now is for developing the lake and it's surrounding the lake was emptied and to all " I know it all" people here we do not have perenial rivers or lakes, all are dependent on rainfall and this year the last rain was in November end post which there was no rains so naturally all lakes have dried up. If PPL sitting in Dubai or else where can call their relatives back here and check. The lake has been developed nicely and children and elders are flocking the place. And I can assure u the lake will be filled, fishes will be back and greenery will thrive once the monsoon is back. Do visit and then give ur opinions.

This is just the beginning of a permanent feature to this place with no source of water supply (rivers drying up) plus premature drying of open and borewells plus massive contamination of private open wells with sewage water; situation is very critical unless concrete steps are taken!?

These "self styled" Vishwagurus do not even know that they have to develop basic needs like top class sewerage system, clean drinking water supply, basic infrastructure, public transportation, pedestrian pathways, etc before squandering huge amounts of public money on such temporary, euphoric, ideas to fool the gullible citizens!!

In this pond my entire childhood spent. This is Kavoor Kula. The water used to be there till Mansoon starts. The nearby arecanut growers as welll paddy fields used to depend on this pond. There was everything alright & when Govt entered in this pond all went wrong. Nowadays in the name of development we are loosing our JEWELS. God Save this Pond
