Mangaluru, Jan 11: Nine including doctors, medical and dental students have been arrested on the charges of peddling ganja and consumption.
Five men and four women are arrested out of which one each are from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, two each hail from Kerala, Punjab and Delhi and one local. Among the nine arrested, there are students, doctors of medical and dental colleges. They were pursuing their under-graduation and post-graduation. Four women were pursuing MBBS and BDS final year. Among the five men, two are medical officers and three are students pursuing MBBS and BDS.
Earlier on January 8, an accused identified as Neil Kishorilal Ramji Shah (35) was arrested from Bunts Hostel. He is an overseas citizen of Indian origin. He had possessed ganja in his flat and was trying to sell it to locals and students.
Police seized 2 kilos of ganja worth Rs 50,000, two mobile phones, and Rs 7,000 cash all together worth Rs 78,000. He purchased ganja from Visakhapatnam.
Police commissioner N Shashi Kumar said, “Neil is a UK citizen and overseas citizen of India living in Mangaluru for the past 15 years. He was pursuing his studies in a dental college and in the past 15 years, he had not completed his education. After a detailed probe Neil, the other nine were arrested. Ganja was also seized from their possession. We have evidence of peddling and consumption.”
The nine accused were produced to the court. They were later sent to two-day police custody.
“After the cooker bomb blast incident, we have strictly imposed certain rules for paying guest accommodations. People have to be alert and inform the right authorities in case of any suspicion,” added the police commissioner.
