Bengaluru, Dec 6: In a major push to encourage sports and enthuse sports medal winners, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday, December 6 announced that the State Cabinet will clear the proposal for direct recruitment of the sportspersons for the government jobs at its next meeting.

The direct recruitment of the sportspersons for the government jobs will be done through the selection committee headed by Additional Chief Secretary (Department of Sports) and also to give Group-A jobs for the winners in Olympics and Paralympics who are degree holders, he said.

Addressing a function organised to present Ekalavya Sports awards and other sports awards in which Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot participated, the Chief Minister said the winners in Asian Games and Commonwealth medal winners and degree holders will be given Group-B jobs and those who have bagged medals in other sports events will be given Group-C and Group-D jobs.

“No other state has the policy of giving jobs to the sports persons except Karnataka,” he said patting the decision being taken by his government.

Training for 75 athletes

Bommai said since August 15 this year, the state government has adopted 75 athletes and will train them for the next Paris Olympics. They will be given training for four years from good coaches and also provide facilities to continue studies.

For this novel scheme, he said the government has spent Rs 10 lakh each and more funds will be given upon requirement. The athletes must show good performance in Commonwealth, Asian Games and Olympics.

'Sports, a symbol of nationalism'

The chief minister said young athletes are the assets of a country and the success is guaranteed if they work hard with integrity. Both the State and the union governments have given importance to it.

“Sports has to develop as a hobby and then it will be considered as a symbol of nationalism,” he said, adding: “Any nation is identified based on the performance in sports.”

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has initiated several steps to bring sports to the national mainstream. In the name of 'Khelo India,' 'Fit India' and 'Jeeto India,” he said and explained that special efforts are being made to create a lot of awareness about the sport.

This helped the country to win more medals in the previous Olympics. India has shown a good performance in the Paralympics also.

Development of youth empowerment and sports

Bommai said the government will come out with a youth policy for the development of youth empowerment and sports and both of them will be given due importance.

“The urge to win is a must in sports and none must play to lose. A positive frame of mind will help them to win any game. Two per cent of posts are reserved for the sportspersons in the Home Department. There are a number of leaders and administrators to give priority to sports and this will help in implementing such policies,” he said.

Youth Empowerment and Sports Minister C Narayanagowda, MLA Rizwan Arshad, Karnataka Olympic Association President Govindaraju, Additional Chief Secretary (Department of Sports and Youth Empowerment) Shalini Rajneesh and others were present.

In the morning, the chief minister garlanded the statue of Dr B R Ambedkar in front of Vidhana Soudha on his death anniversary and 66th Mahaparinirvan.

Social justice, equality and equal opportunities were some of the key ideals of Dr Ambedkar, the architect of Indian Constitution, he said explaining the various schemes and programmes launched by his government for the welfare of the scheduled castes and scheduled castes.
