Two Killed in Hospital Firing, Cops Suspect Business Enimity

Rohtak (Haryana), May 19 (IANS) A liquor contractor and a security guard were killed in a hospital's emergency ward here when unidentified gunmen opened fire at them early Thursday, police said. Four policemen have been suspended for failing to prevent the shooting or nab the attackers.

Parveen Kumar, 35-year-old liquor contractor from Julana town, and hospital security guard Tejvir Singh, 31, were killed in the shooting at the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) here, about 70 km from New Delhi. Besides, one person, Sanjeevan, was injured in the incident.

Police officials said the firing was the outcome of business enmity and an argument between two groups.

When the incident took place, a police control room (PCR) vehicle was parked right outside the emergency ward of the hospital but police could not stop the attackers from escaping. Following this, four police officers have been suspended by the authorities.

"Earlier yesterday (Wednesday) there was verbal exchange of words between Parveen and Jai Bhagwan. Soon after that quarrel between them, Jai Bhagwan was fired at by some person, in which he (Jai Bhagwan) was critically injured. Jai Bhagwan named Parveen as an accused on suspicion," a police spokesman said.

"Meanwhile, Sanjay, brother of Parveen, was injured in a road accident. Parveen took his brother to PGIMS-Rohtak, Already, Jai Bhagwan was admitted there and his brother Sanjeevan along with three other persons was waiting outside the emergency ward."

"On the arrival of Parveen in PGIMS-Rohtak, firing took place, in which Parveen lost his life on the spot. When the assailant tried to escape, the security guard tried to catch him. He was also fired at and he died at the spot," he added.

Sanjeevan, who was injured in the firing, is now admitted at the same hospital.

"He (Sanjeevan) is being questioned by the police on suspicion because other three persons with him fled the scene," he said.

Police said the attackers came and opened fire at Parveen, who belonged to Julana town in Jind district. He died on the spot.

While they were running away, PGIMS security guard Tejvir tried to stop them but he was also shot dead.

"Both of them died before making any statement. Doctors tried to provide them medical aid, but could not save them," Station House Officer (SHO) Ramesh Kumar told IANS.

"Business enmity is the cause of this incident. Parveen was a liquor contractor and yesterday (Wednesday) night he was assaulted by members of some rival business group in Jind town. From there, he was brought to the PGIMS," he added.

Meanwhile, police sources said that they have recovered the black Baleno car, in which theyn believed the attackers had fled. The police are also looking for a white Swift car in which they could have fled.

"We have also detained two people and their questioning is on. Right now, we cannot divulge any more details," said a police official.

Seema, official spokesperson of PGIMS, said: "After this incident, hospital authorities called an emergency meeting. Resident Doctors Association has decided to give Rs.5 lakh compensation to the family of Tejvir."

"This incident has happened due to the inefficiency of police and four policemen have been suspended for their negligence," she said.
