Mangaluru: Thousands of litres of water virtually goes down drain

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Feb 2: The city corporation has before it the ambitious plan of ensuring uninterrupted water supply throughout to the citizens of the city through its 'Jalasiri' scheme. At the same time, it is ignoring several spots from where water is flowing out continuously due to ruptured pipes. One such example is visible at the main road at Karangalpady.

Water is draining away in front of the gate of St Aloysius higher primary school on Kudmul Ranga Rao Road since the last some months. But for some strange reason, the corporator of the area and the water supply officials of the city corporation seem to have failed to notice this. Even though the stream is thin, the water that has gone waste since the last two months accounts for thousands of litres. Locals and pedestrians too are upset that the leakage is not repaired.

Pipe has ruptured under the concrete road and water is oozing out from the bottom of an electric pole standing there. As there is no drain for the water to flow, it has stagnated by the roadside. As it is a concreted road, the water is not absorbed. Because of the presence of trees and shadow, the water is not getting evaporated either. As foliage and mud along with the water have decomposed, black colour water has accumulated there. It has also turned into a mosquito breeding spot.

Although footpath work has been undertaken from the direction of PVS circle on Kudmul Ranga Rao Road, from the court road, only a small amount of work has been conducted. The steel rods used for concrete works are rusting by the roadside. The roadsides were concreted recently without taking care of the water pipe. Now the concrete road will have to be dug. This road had earlier been dug many time for underground drainage, water pipeline and other purposes.

The spot where the water has got accumulated can become an accident zone. As water has got stranded by the edge of the concrete road, pedestrians have to walk along with vehicles on the road. Vehicular traffic is dense here and a little careless can give rise to catastrophe.

City mayor Diwakar Pandeshwar said that the engineers of the water supply department have been asked to take steps to address the problem.

Water leakage and wastage is not at all an issue for Mangaloreans. They are only concerned about what name should be given to which road and what all roads to be renamed after whom.

This is very true...in Mangalur, some areas get water supply once in two days. And they leave it for three to four hours ... initially pressure is very low followed by pressure will be more at the time of closure under the plan of "JALASIRI YOJANA'. But, water from old pipelines, which they cut and dummy now, flows everyday into drainage and such a waste that people say, instead of cutting the pipe line at the junction and allow the water to go as waste, could have given to us. Atleast we could have made use of it instead of waiting for the every third day....!! No one comes and stop the wastage even after complaining...no corporators, no mcc, no water department...!!!!.

Fresh water and drainage pipes should never be below a cement concrete road. They should be below footpaths. But if there are no footpaths........

Albert @Mangalore , well said. But who will ‘bell the cat’? No knows whom to complain, where to complain and even if done is there any one to monitor if action has been taken to rectify. We only talk of smart city and waste public money on wasteful things. So many places we can find water flowing, garbage thrown on the roadside, abandoned vehicles dumped, and who cares. We can use these forums to vent our opinions as well as anger. That’s it.

Catch the neck of the corporator of the area and the water supply officials of the city corporation and parade them on donkeys from the site to Nehru Maidan, with public garlanding with old chappals!
Make sure donkeys are not hurt! Beasuase why should donkeys suffer instead of these rotten animals called corporator and government officials!?

Corporation has most corrupt officers! Give them money they will do Job.
Same situation for major places in Mangalore where water is getting leaked and they are unable to supply water to residential houses. They have very narrow pipes where water pressure is less and hence cannot be delivered to all houses and may are suffering due to this.

Officials/Corporators - Please wake up and do your job.
