32nd National Road Safety Week kick-started in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jan 20: Deputy general manager of Union Bank of India Jagannath Shetty inaugurated the 32nd National Road Safety Week 2021 with a theme ‘Sadak Suraksha Jeevan Raksha’, here on Wednesday January 20 at T V Raman Pai hall.

Addressing the gathering, police commissioner N Shashi Kumar said, “There is need of raising awareness on traffic among public. We can see more deaths in accidents which is four times more than murders. People are seen violating traffic rules such as talking over phone while riding, overloading in vehicles and triple ride on two-wheelers. Police are imposing fines to regulate traffic violation and not to increase the government’s revenue. Mangaluru is known as an education hub. Students should follow traffic rules and create awareness among public.”

DCP Vinay Goankar said, “Traffic awareness programme will be conducted for the next one month in Mangaluru. There is steep fall in accidents and the deaths which is a good sign compared to last couple of years. In 2018, there were 165 accidents, in 2019 there were 146 accidents and in 2020 there were 114 accidents. In 2018 there were 120 deaths, in 2019 there were 154 deaths and in 2020 there were 116 deaths. Due to coronavirus pandemic and road works on NH 66, accident rates have come down. We have also sent a proposal to install CCTV cameras and smart signals at junctions under Smart City project.”

DCP Hariram said, “Many people lose their lives in accidents. During corona pandemic, people were so scared and took all precautions such as wearing mask, sanitizers and many more. But when it comes to wearing helmet and following traffic rules, people do not do it. Following traffic rules is for one’s own safety.”

Meanwhile, students of School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya performed a skit on traffic awareness.

Prior to the formal function, the police commissioner flagged off a traffic awareness rally from the police commissioner's office to TV Raman Pai hall.

Senior postal superintendent Harsha N, and regional transport commissioner R M Varnekar was also present.

    Provide proper infrastructures to our roads first. Many of our cross roads are found beyond repairs. Even the concrete roads are neglected. The shoulders of roads are not filled up. I think for name sake and as a matter of routine the Road safety weeks are being celebrated annually to spend the allotment given for it. But reality is absent.
    No of cases like talking over phone while riding bikes and driving cars are increasing day by day. It should be controlled taking severe action as accidents do happen by such traffic violations. We can see lot of two wheelers including ladies ride their bikes in main roads and the traffic police have become silent spectators to this doing nothing .

    Indian Hi Way built as secondary Hi Way of developed country. No warning signs, no regulatory signs and no side walks for the people to move.

    During this program will the traffic personnel see that the slow moving vehicles such trucks, buses, rickshaws and two wheelers not to be in the fast lane.... that lane is only for the people who follow the speed limits and to overtake. If anyone is using pull them over and warn with a minimum fine...

    This program should educate the public about the traffic rules, where and when to overtake, how to merge and how to change lanes, why STOP and YIELD signs are erected etc. There are lots to list.... but basics will get through....

    Road Safety seriously ? 90% of roads are in dead pathetic condition, they collect Life time road tax while purchasing new vehicle, are the roads really safe ?

    When most of the roads are not motorable and most of the roads do not have good footpath. What is the use of Road Safety Week all drama about road safety. We have no space for pedestrians to walk on footpath.
