Disposal of construction waste: High court takes Mangaluru City Corporation commissioner to task

Bengaluru, Dec 17: The high court (HC) has directed the commissioner of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) to confirm whether rules relating to disposal of construction waste are being followed when executing 34 works undertaken within the city limits under the Smart City project.

A division bench of the high court presided over by Chief Justice A S Oka, which heard a public interest litigation filed by Karnataka Legal Services Authority, took the commissioner severely to task for failing to stick to rules. The bench directed him to appear for hearing on December 23 through video conferencing facility and provide explanation for the lapse.

Advocate for the petitioner said that 34 works have been undertaken in Mangaluru city under the Smart City project. He said that rules and regulations are not being followed when disposing of waste generated at the sites of these works, duly pointing out that the waste lying at the work sites have not been cleared and this has been creating an impediment for the smooth movement of the people.

"Without you getting smarter, how do you expect to make the city smart? Why are steps as per 2016 rules on construction waste disposal not followed? Why is the Smart City corporation a silent spectator to these violations," the high court wanted to know.

    da karangalpady new cross road (c.g kamath road) is so bad with unfilled ponds since 3 years. da exclusively rain water flowing small thodu is flowing with drainage water 24 hours with very bad smelling 2 da surrounding places. no care takers at all . corporator smt. leelavati prakash is just sleeping at home.

    MCC commissioner may be working under the supervision of RSS. System is so bad in Mangalore, instead of building extra water facilities , waste disposals, drainage & sewage systems they are issuing golden egg laying apartments permissions. MCC Mayor is involved in unnecessary roads & places of name changes only and does no other works.

    Once the concrete work was done from LIC, RTO, govt college till the road to Hampankatta Junction. Later once again they dug the concreted road from Hampankatta to RTO, LIC road for pipe laying work.

    At bunder junction near IOB a drainage was leaking, presently the drainage leaking is stopped but around the manhole it was dug and was kept as it is without filling . It is like a pond kept open from a couple of weeks.

    Virtually these idiots have no planning how to carryout work at all whatsoever.

    They are just wasting citizens tax paid money.
