Mangaluru: INTUC emerges victorious among trade unions at Port Trust

Mangaluru, Dec 14: Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) affiliated to 'The Canara Port Workers Union' at New Mangalore Port Trust emerged victorious in the election held for recognition of trade unions at Port Trust.

The New Mangalore Port Trust is one of the 11 major ports of India and recognised as the Gateway of Karnataka. The election was conducted as per the directives of the ministry of shipping for recognition of Trade Unions at NMPT. The recognition will be accorded to the trade unions for two years from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2023.

The present term will expire on March 31. Based on the election result, two trustees will be appointed on the Board of Trustees from among the Trade Union at NMPT.



The election process was held for three days from December 7 to December 9 and the counting of votes conducted on December 11. In a multi-cornered contest, INTUC emerged victorious defeating HMS, BJP affiliated BMS and CPI affiliated AITUC Trade Unions. The national president of INTUC, Dr Sanjiva Reddi, Indian National Port and Dock Workers Federation President Samantharay, former president N M Adyanthaya and INTUC Karnataka in-charge Shantha Kumar hailed this feat.

In a function held at New Mangalore Port Trust, the union president and state working president, Rakesh Malli thanked the employees of NMPT for reposing faith in INTUC and making the union No 1 at NMPT for the second time in a row. The employees expressed their gratitude to all the union leaders of INTUC. Aboobakar Krishnapura, trustee of New Mangalore Port Trust representing INTUC in the board said that the employees voted in favour of INTUC because of the relentless teamwork of all the office bearers of the union and quick redressal of the grievances at the time of crisis. He assured that union leaders will be on their toes to help the members whenever needed. He also thanked the national president, federation leaders, and the state INTUC office bearers for their support and guidance. K Farooq, working president, M Shivanna, federation organizing secretary and Bharath Kumar, union vice-president were present.
