Udupi, Dec 9: The coronavirus pandemic has caused a major blow to the entire economy, including the education sector. With the economic crisis looming, parents are finding it difficult to finance the education of their kids. An outcome of this situation is the increase in the number of admissions of the children in government schools.

“Many parents, especially those who enrolled their children in prestigious private schools or under the RTE quota in private schools, are turning to government schools for admissions. The main reason behind this is the financial constraint suffered by them because of the pandemic. However, one of the things the education department noticed is that some of the private schools are harassing the children by withholding their transfer certificate over non-payment of fees. This is not acceptable, if we receive complaints from any of the parents concerning this issue, we will definitely take action against that responsible institution as per the government guidelines. We will not let the commercialisation of education take place," said N H Nagur, deputy director of public instruction.

"It is a good development that more than 1,832 children have enrolled in government schools this year. Udupi is known for providing quality education and people here are highly educated," he added.

"We will initiate 'Prerana camps' for primary and high school teachers every Saturday and Sunday so that they can improve their teaching proficiency. The main purpose of the programme is to motivate the teachers. The education department will definitely put sincere efforts into retaining the legacy that the district has when it comes to quality education," Nagur said.

"An invigilator meeting was held recently and a survey will be conducted on how many of the students watch the 'Samveda TV' programme. Another programme planned by the education department is the Phone-in for the SSLC students that will be conducted every week. It will begin in January 2021," he said.

"Previous year, Udupi slipped to fourth place in the SSLC results. But this year we are determined to secure the first place in the state. For this, the district education department is ready to facilitate a new atmosphere for the students which will help them with availing quality education," DDPI Nagur added.

Nagendrappa education officer of Akshar Dasoha, Ravindra Hegde Government Primary School Nellikatte, Mudradi, Prakash B B education coordinator Brahmavar, O R Prakash, BEO Brahmavar and Umesh Nayak were present.
