Mangaluru: No change in mindset of citizens, garbage still thrown on roadside

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Nov 23: The habit of discarding garbage on the roadside has still not stopped by the citizens of Mangaluru, a large number of which consists of educated and cultured people. If a person just takes a tour of the city in the early morning the discarded garbage on the roadside can be seen everywhere. It is really unfortunate that though the administration has brought several improvised methods to dispose of garbage, the mindset of citizens is still the same.

MCC is collecting garbage from homes bifurcating the same into dry and wet waste. There is also the accusation that the public is not cooperating in the segregation of waste.

If both husband and wife are working, then they will not be available when the waste-collecting vehicle comes to their house. If they keep it outside, dogs will bite and spread the garbage everywhere. That is why most of the working couple keep the same in their house. During the night, they go by their vehicle dispose of the garbage at the roadside and come back to their house. Dogs of that locality also spread that waste all around. Environmental lover Mahesh says that there is a system of fixing a box outside the house and keep the garbage in it.

It is common to see that the garbage has been thrown along the Helipad road of Maryhill, Valencia road, Yeyyadi, Urwa Market, Central Market and other areas of the city. On Helipad road nearly 25 loads of garbage from construction buildings is dumped. Some dispose of the waste of chicken and vegetables directly into the river. Several people have been identified in Kulur who used to throw garbage into Gurpur river. Citizens are saying that the MCC does not take any action against the offenders. That is why these acts are being repeated.

Former MLA J R Lobo says, "MCC has completely failed in handling waste of Mangaluru city. Due to the confusion in dry and wet waste, citizens are dumping the garbage on roadside. Some others are disposing of the same in rivers. There is shortcomings in the MCC administration system and also people who throw garbage on roadside."

Mayor Diwakar Pandeshwar says, "MCC is following many improved methods in managing waste. Because of the bifurcation of dry and wet waste, its management has become easier. Every citizen should be aware that throwing garbage on the roadside is wrong and also causes damage to the environment. If this awareness is not there any amount of improvement in garbage collection will be of no use."

This will happen unless dust bins are installed in every place.. My place is just 5 kms far from bajpe, but we don't have any garbage bins anywhere near by!! nor any vehicle from municipality comes to pick it up!! we have to carry it all the way to Kavoor while going to Mangalore and throw it!! other option is throw anywhere u feel its full of garbage!! Please try to solve garbage issue so we can throw waste to dust bins rather throwing on roads!!!

Nobody cares swachcha Bharat abhiyan...., Hindustan's present prime minister's one of the first initiative-swachch Bharat & toilet construction (it may be well noted that the self confessed Chaiwala duty on railway platform during his child hood days would have made him observe the difficulty of people in need of toilet to relieve & the dirty surrounding of the venue, would have naturally inspired to give importance to swachcha Bharat abhiyan), however, b'coz of Marwari & Gujju community invasion into m'lore would have resulted in dirty streets and surrounding...,

    Second best view is welcome..

    All the three have responsibilities
1 Citizens can minimize waste e.g Vegetable waste can be directly be put in garden or pots ,earthworms will do the rest.Plastic waste should be "sold" to plastic collection centers of MCC.Other waste should be segregated and given to the waste collector AW.Owners of dogs should be registered for a small fee and should be responsible for disposing dog poop correctly.
    2. Waste collectors should not keep the waste collected at "collection points" but directly transfer it into the van, before stray dogs get it.They should see that the collected waste does not fall off from the vans, esp while taking a turn.
3 MCC can convert the plastic collected into petroleum products which can bring revenue.Dow chemicals and Boise do it why not Atmanirbhar Bharat? If not it can be sold to these 2 companies by MCC. Brooming of the streets except some roads is not seen, it should be done regularly.Rag pickers should be given better incentives.Construction waste should be collected on request.

We have garbage collection by panchayet after payment, but those staying in 3 cent colonies who need it most don't have so they have no other alternative but to throw by roadsides. Till recently we too had same problem since not single garbage bin upto Udupi because they can't maintain. Not common mans fault who prefers cleanliness if given facilities.

Unfortunately there are so many of these so called decent, who brag about morals and ethics and principles and brag about swach Bharath, who slow down their cars or bikes and throw garbage on tue roadside. It is because of these hypocrites and ofcourse adding to that highly mismanaged garbage collection agencies, responsible for this. All boils down to culture. We practice something else than what we preach.

Yes dogs messing up the garbage bags. They are also unseen citizens of India. India is protecting the dogs. Feeding the dogs. So it has to bear the trouble from the dogs. Dogs are responsible for accidents. They bite people. They chase two wheelers. They bite and spread the garbage on the road. Still the govt is not taking initiative to control these dogs. Let dogs family grow. During lock down many coolie workers didnt had food. But these dogs had enough food.

It is not something new that garbage is thrown on roadside in Mangalore but it is the same in Udupi too. I feel these garbage bags full of dry and wet waste is thrown in the night. This is a nice feed for stray dogs, cats, and other animals after rummaging through the bags. By morning the leftovers are littered on the roads and streets. Now who is to be blamed for this?

I was in Switzerland and I saw their system about garbage.
The resident has to purchase government garbage bags from any store which will cost euro 200 (rs 16000 rupees) for 10 bags. You have to separate all garbage and keep it separately and government truck will collect. The garbage kept in only government bags will be collected. Government will watch each and every corner and they will penalize if any unauthorized garbage bags,
I asked why they are charging 200 euro for 10 bags.? My daughter replied that collection of garbage is to born by all people. Government will cover their expenses from garbage bag sale.

In Sweden people has to separatetgeir in about 45 type. Government will recycle the garbage.
Here people will do whatever they want and blame each other...

Well, here in India especially in Mangalore govt pockets garbage collection tax and then asks citizens to deal with thier own garbage by burning which is again a environmental hazard and proned for environment green tax. As in developed countries here too govt should come up with a appropriate solution but this govt is not ready to listen to people's grievances only wants money from them. AAP govt in Delhi to go on press conference on corruption by BJP pocketing all municipal taxes by BJP leaders.

This system can work in India too. But what about the stray dogs? Forget stray dogs, there are strict rules in Switzerland for Pet Dogs too. Over here in India our Pet Dogs are taken for a walk just to avoid the Dog's Waste being all over the Owner's premises. They do not care if their Dogs misuse Public Property

Unless our mindset changes, there is no point in awareness. It should be using a strict law to prevent littering. Indians outside India seems to be considerate about this as these countries have strict law. This is the only way that eventually changes our mindsets.

Don't ever blame the citizens, people have kept the garbage at the road curb side and its govt/ municiple authority's duty to pick up and dispose. People are paying taxes for this and they expect local administration to do thier part. If this is the 'Smart City' initiative by the govt which is the basic and fundamental priority of the govt then we know which stinking path we are heading.

Karnataka government asked not to burn firecrackers during diwali but Rama sena chief went against that rule. If they would have punished that man than no one have dare to burn firecrackers.
