Mangaluru, Nov 20: There have been allegations that crores of rupees are being spent for unnecessary things just because Smart City funds are available, whereas places, where repairs are urgently required, have been left without attending to them. The main road between Pumpwell and Kankanady which is in a bad state since the last two years goes to prove the above allegations.
Right from light to heavy vehicles enter the city from Bengaluru, Mysuru and Kerala through Pumpwell and Kankanady by using this road. This main road witnesses movement of thousands of vehicles every hour. Even though this road is dotted with potholes and rough patches for the last two years, even temporary patchwork has not been done. The fact that the officials and people's representatives have turned a blind eye to the condition of this road has given rise to anguish in the minds of the people.
Two years back, this road had been dug up for executing underground drainage work. After completing the work, the dugout mud was heaped to close the gap. Because of the movement of vehicles, this mud has peeled off. Thereafter, crushed stones had been poured there. Because of heavy vehicular movement, these crushed stones have also come off.
This road has witnessed a number of accidents. For the two-wheeler riders, in particular, this road poses a grave danger as the crushed stones that are lying loose on the road get darted towards different directions when vehicle tyres move on them, and many a time hit the two-wheelers and injure them.
As vehicles from two national highways enter the city through this road, the area sees heavy traffic in the mornings and evenings. Sometimes it takes 30 to 45 minutes to travel from Pumpwell to Ambedkar circle.
Shivbagh city corporator, Kavya Nataraj Alva, said she knows about the problem and she keeps getting complaints. She said that the work is kept pending as road widening work is due here. She said that to obviate problems created for the people, temporary patchwork will be done soon.
