Mangaluru: Tunnel highway through Shiradi Ghat - Land acquisition to begin soon

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Nov 20: On account of frequent landslides and road damages during the monsoon months, maintaining of the Shiradi Ghat stretch of the national highway 75 has been most challenging job over the years. Now, most of the processes for the much-awaited tunnel route under the Shiradi Ghat that will considerably reduce the distance between the city and Bengaluru and reduce the driving time as well as fuel, have been completed. The National Highways Authority of India is now awaiting the land acquisition notification.

The tunnel is proposed to be laid from Addahole to Heggade in Sakleshpur. The distance of the tunnel will be 23.57 km. Most of the land proposed to be used for the road is owned by the government and about 30 percent is privately owned. Therefore, land acquisition might prove to be a smooth affair and tender will be floated thereafter, sources said.

The tunnel route will pass through Addahole, Gundia, Yedakumeri, Kadagaravalli and Marnahalli. It will have six tunnels and ten bridges. Cost of the project had been estimated at Rs 10,015 crore seven years ago, and now it might be about Rs 12,000 crore. Japan International Cooperative Agency (JICA) had prepared the detailed project report of the project. Previously JICA was planned to partner the project, but now the tunnel will be part of the ambitious Sagar Mala project of the government with technical support from Japan.

One of the major advantages of this tunnel is that a large chunk of the export business that is routed through Chennai port now may be diverted to Mangaluru as the transportation of heavy goods will be smoother. Chennai port is under pressure now as even Odisha is dependent on it. Already, tender has been floated for 262 km express highway costing Rs 20,000 crore between Bengaluru and Chennai. There is proposal to convert Mangaluru-Bengaluru national highway into express highway and the tunnel will supplement the progress of the region.

wonder how many generations will come and go before this damn tunnel becomes a reality making the road travel to Mangalore bearable. Or will it, keeping with the nature of the present Shiradi Ghat road, collapse within a year of commissioning?

The congress/jds government did nothing but patchwork whenever the road condition became severe and extreme. Now it has taken six years for BJP to realize that permanent solution is needed. It is said that Japan has now dumped the idea of funding. Whether the Central government has made budgetary
provision for this ambitious project? Whether funds have been allocated and held in escrow account
for land acquisition? In the absence of concrete measures this grandiose announcement will certainly end up as a white elephant. The government rather provide us time tested asphalted road like Yamuna
expressway in UP. Excessive rainfall is no excuse to provide durable road which has been achieved
elsewhere in South America and rain forests of Malaysia /Indonesia with similar or worse condition.

The culture of a country decides how well we develop. For example here we wpuld have saved a lot in costs of building the tunnel, in costs of road repairs, in costs to vehicle owners, in costs to giving more business to the Mangalore port thus saving money for Karnataka and so on, if at all we acted faster, earlier than sitting on the files all these years. All the government's that have come and gone and are ruling today knew connectivity between Mangalore and Bangalore is very crucial. But while they collected tolls in about 6 to 7 places from there to here, the govt did nothing. Lethargy has cost us a lot of money time and even loads of human lives

Very much needed. Please construct and complete as soon as possible. Also need to convert Mangaluru - Bengaluru national highway into express highway. This will help in overall development of coastal cities. Mangaluru and Udupi districts will attract more investment and hope locals will get benefit of more jobs.

The planning of constructing a tunnel Highway is highly appreciated. But how about repairing the present potholes between Sakleshpur and the concrete road as well as between Mani and BC Road to avoid damage to vehicles and passengers? There is no rocket science involved to execute this work.
