Mangaluru: 'Students sentiment hurt'- St Aloysius over renaming of College road

Mangaluru, Sep 23: St Aloysius College management has expressed displeasure regarding the overnight decision of local administration to rename St Aloysius College road to Mulky Sundaram Shetty road on Wednesday, September 23.

Addressing media here on Wednesday, September 23 the registrar in-charge Dr Alwyn D'Sa said, "We strongly condemn this one-sided decision carried out by the administration over renaming St Aloysius College road to Mulky Sundaram Shetty road without any discussions. Although a notification on this was released on September 5, the decision was announced overnight and the renaming ceremony took place on September 23. The decision was carried out in a hushed manner and amid coronavirus pandemic, there was politics at play here."

"This draconian decision has hurt the sentiments of thousands of passionate admirers of St Aloysius College educational institutions. In 1976 the road was named St Aloysius College road by the Mangaluru municipality under the presidentship of Late Blasius D'Souza. The management was successful in bringing the stay order on July 2017 to the order issued by the state government on May 24, 2017 asking for renaming of the road. In response to this, the Vijaya Bank employees association filed a writ appeal against the stay order which was turned down by the high court," said Alwyn D'Sa.

"The judgement delivered on April 11, 2019 by the high court had directed the civic authorities to call both parties concerned and reach an amicable settlement. St Aloysius College management in its memorandum submitted on February 19, 2020, made a plea to involve the College in all the future deliberations on the issue," he added.

"The way order was passed and ceremony was conducted is highly condemnable as it was done without any discussion. St Aloysius College was sidelined and socially distanced. We were called on February 19 to submit our statement in the presence of commissioner regarding the issue and ever since then we were not communicated over the development of road renaming issue," said Alwyn D'Sa.

Rector St Aloysius Institutions, Fr Melwin Pinto said, "We do not have any problem with Mulky Sundaram Shetty or Vijaya Bank. I cannot understand the logic in being adamant to rename this stretch as Mulky Sundaram Shetty. When Vijaya Bank was merged with Bank of Baroda not a single person uttered a word. It is a shameful act, that 140 years of service of this college has been sidelined, within no time and a decision was taken overnight to rename the road."

"Coronavirus pandemic is prevailing in the district, instead of taking measure to control the virus, authorities are involved in renaming the roads. What is the need to rename a road which already exists. There are many such roads which do not have any names, no one will object naming them. Why such adamant behaviour towards renaming this road when the even the Bank head office does not exist here, this is unacceptable," he stressed.

"There are public sentiments attached with St Aloysius College which is being ignored, that is painful. The St Aloysius College road name was given in 1976 as a recognition for the service rendered by the College. However, now it has been changed which shows unworthiness and is an insult to our institution," said Fr Melwin Pinto.

Principal in-charge Dr Denis Fernandes, Student Council president Gavin Abner Pinto, College Alumni Association's Santhosh Kumar Kadri, N G Mohan and others were present.

100%. The pettiness of learned intellectuals at St. Aloysius is gobsmacking. Don't get into Civil Administration, let muncipality guys do their job. It is not as if, Muncipality has asked to change the name of St. Aloysius Collge to Shetty College. right or wrong, people have a natural tendency to look at it from a communal angle and issue then gets blown out of control. St. Aloysius should just concentrate on doing what they do best, "creating future leaders".

Mangalore Muncipality are also totally jobless unnecessarily raking up an controversy. Anyone with a 2 piece brain can workout quickly that this will get controversial. Why unnecessarily stir the hornets nest. If you want to rename a road, don't make any grand annoucement. Just replace the sign overnight and tell the post office, that's it.

I take back my statement. After getting enough inputs on this issue, I feel that we must be worried about the matter for two main reasons:

First, After hearing about the issue, I came to know that there is a formal procedure to be followed when there is a dispute between the parties on naming any public infrastructure . There is a standard procedure for the adjudication of the case and the court must properly listen to the arguments of both parties’ claim to name the road by the name that they want. But there is a allegation that this is not properly done.

Second, I’m apprehensive, whether these people really have respect towards mulky shetty and want to name this road by his name in his honor or because of their hatred towards St.Aloysius College. Many recent incidents and public speeches by the right wing groups make us believe that the latter is true. If this is the case, then in future the day might come, where within a night the whole institution might get vandalized and we may have to remain quiet for decades till justice is done as it happened with Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, where the whole monument was was brought down and even after two and half decades no verdict has come regarding the culprits involved in the destruction.

Though I feel that St.Aloysius would not have won the case since majority of the people would definitely prefer a Hindu name to the roads and places in India over christian as it happened with the renaming of many places in UP to a Hindu one from the Islam names, still they should have given equal space to put forward their claim.

Why name after an individual, when a name after a prestigious institution is existing already . Corporation should spend their time on expanding and improving the suburbs, which have nameless roads.

We do have a great respect for Mr. Mulki Sundaram Shetty who is a great Legend , Philanthropist and Visionary. But renaming a road where already has a name is not a befitting tribute, instead we could have chosen any other way to give him proper respect. His memorial has been built around the famous Durga Parameshwari Temple, in Mulki., and we pray for him every time when ever we visit.

The visionary requires a great respect and we the people of Karnataka, that too of Dakshina Kannada must plan to give him a best tribute.

    Thanks.

I am an alumni of St. Aloysius college. Have studied there all the way from 1st standard to final year degree but never have I called it St Aloysius road. It was always bavuta gudde or Light house hill road and will continue to be called so by almost all the citizens of Mangalore irrespective of the name change.

Dear All this was cowardly act of the MCC. We all know they do not respect anyone. They should have renamed this road as Bhagat Singh road and all Mangaloreans will be surprised that we have a Bhagat Singh road in a remote area in Hoige bazar. In fact Bhagat Singh sacrificed his life for the nation not the Mulky fellow. It is so sad that they have named a road which is in a remote place to a Martyr. The road also is in a very bad shape.
The MCC does not know the importance of naming roads. Their logic is only renaming roads.

My sincere advice to all - Ignore these things & concentrate on doing good for the society as most of us normally do.
Many more similar & gruesome incidents  will take place in the near future systematically for which we will not be in a position to oppose.

Grow spiritually coz tribulation has already started in many parts of the world. The below scripture is going to be fulfilled soon, Hence  prepare the younger generation so that they will not be surprised.

''Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One  (God) who can destroy both soul and body in hell.''

    Dear Ajay
I understand your concern but It is written

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

    It is also written
Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause.

Hence, we will continue honor the widow and give justice to the orphans as usual. We must find our joy in these areas. Every one cannot live like this.

The irony is..., By naming the Road in his name, that too by causing disgrace to one of ICONIC Educational institution of M'lore, these Jokers did great amount of damage to the reputation of Late MS Ram Shetty, in addition also caused irreparable damage to the pride of Mangaloreans.

So after people like you put in effort to develop that area then they will put thier name with power and right. So have we learnt anything from this lesson?????????...

At that time in 19th century, Britishers were ruling!! Do you know at that time from whom they snatched lands in India and renamed everything to their wims and fancy interests??? All names would be either victoria or etc....why you don't read history first and then understand from where those names came and who renamed them???

None of these lands belonged to truemangaloreans, not even shettys or their ancestors.
    They were with Adivasis.
Next Dravidians snatched lands from Adivasis.
Next Aryans snatched lands from Adivasis and Dravidians.
Next the Britishers snatched lands, with petty amounts as barter of the goods.
The land should be given back to Adivasis who were neither Hindus or any other religion.
Try to learn the history yourself. Not the Tippu Sultan history, where the real history is corrupted. As the time goes Indian History will go to dogs and reformatted one will come in its place.
Dont go back to Britishers, atleast britishers helped India to India to unite as one, while all the rulers till the Independence of India were fighting one another.
