Udupi: Seven years after Ranjitha's murder, accused convicted, jailed for life

Udupi, Sep 17: In connection with the murder of Ranjitha (19) seven years back at Patel Thota in Kadekar village in the taluk, the chief district and sessions court here, through an order passed on Wednesday September 16, sentenced the accused to imprisonment for his entire remaining life term.

The accused who faced this sentence happens to be Yogesh (32) a resident of Patel Thota in Kadekar village. The murder had happened wthin the limits of Malpe police station in the year 2013.

Udupi police circle inspector, Maruti G Nayak, had investigated the case after arresting the accusd on Deccember 1, 2013. Charge sheet was filed in the court on February 14, 2014.

Background: Yogesh used to work as an electrician. He was desirous of marrying Ranjitha, a student living next door. He used to follow the girl often when she went to college and harassed her on the way. When Rajitha resisted his moves, he threatened to kill her. On September 29, 2013, Ranjitha had filed a police complaint against Yogesh. Infuriated by this complaint, Yogesh had stabbed Ranjitha in the back with a knife at around 9.30 am on November 27, 2013 when she was speaking to her friends. A case was thereafter filed against him in Malpe police station. Yogesh went absconding, and after three days of manhunt, was arrested on November 30 with the help of the locals.

Judge of the court, Subrahmanya J, who conducted the trial and examined witnesses, found that the charge had been proved. He declared the accused guilty on September 14 and pronounced the quantum of sentence on Wednesday. The accused was in jail since the last seven years as bail was denied to him.

Senior public prosecutor, Shanthi Bai, had argued the case on bealf of the prosecution.

    After long seven years ,he is now convicted and jailed for life long....was it necessary to stab and now in jail??He should have get capital punishment to show and warn other people,it doesnt pay to do such crimes.A poor girls life is gone.she cannot come back,even accused one got this punishmet.may her soul rest in peace.

    Although the justice is made, delay of 7 years on a clear cut murder case is not acceptable.
