Bengaluru, Jul 30: After the issue relating to dropping of certain lessons from the state syllabus in the light of reduced size of the academic year threatened to blow into a controversy, the education department suspended the work of pruning down of the syllabus.

Academic activity has not yet begun because of problems created by coronavirus infection. There is no clarity as to when the academic year begins. Therefore, Karnataka Textbook Society had calculated the availability of man-days for the current academic year as 120 and accordingly dropped certain lessons from the text books to as to effect a 30 percent cut in the syllabus, and uploaded details thereof in its website.

Some of the lessons dropped pertain to Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan, Prophet Mohammad, Jesus, Rani Abbakka and lessons relating to the Indian Constitution. After this news got publicity through the media and controversy began to surface, the education department has halted the work of cutting down on the syllabus temporarily.

Commenting on, the issue primary and secondary education minister, Suresh Kumar, said that the department had proposed to cut down syllabus to be taught from first to tenth standard in a scientific manner. "As the exact period of the academic year has not been fixed so far, reduced syllabus has not been finalised. In the coming days, cuts will be affected on the basis of time available for teaching. None of the texts will be deleted unnecessarily and there is no room for any confusion, he stated.

Suresh Kumar also said that there is no question of hiding the historic details of any person relating to history. He said that the current government believes in building the society, and not breaking it.
