Mangaluru: Flight chartered by KSCC brings stranded Kannadigas from Sharjah

Media Release

Mangaluru, Jun 21: Karnataka Sports and Cultural Club (KSCC), an entity registered with Community Development Authority, UAE and government of Dubai, UAE, has become the first sports and cultural club to arrange a charter flight to repatriate stranded Kannadigas in the UAE. The flight landed at Mangaluru International Airport at 11 am on Sunday June 21.

The Air Arabia flight with 173 passengers took off from Sharjah International Airport around 6 am (UAE time). The flight had 29 pregnant women, 16 children, five infants, senior citizens, people with medical emergencies, people who have lost jobs, stranded visit visa holders and those who had reported deaths in their families.

KSCC manager Shafi said that all the legal procedures were carried out smoothly. The charter flight was arranged only for stranded Kannadigas.

KSCC had set up a help desk to finalize the list of passengers, given discounted ticket fares for needy passengers who could afford the full repatriation cost, and free PPE kits and snacks to all the passengers.

Rapid tests for coronavirus were conducted before departure and mandatory quarantine for all the passengers was arranged according to protocol in three hotels in Mangaluru for a period of seven days.

KSCC officials Shafi, Althaf, Javed, Naseer and volunteers were present at the airport at the time of departure to assist the passengers.

KSCC expressed gratitude to consulate general, deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district Sindhu B Rupesh, Umar U H, and Ataullah Jokkate for their support in making this happen.

    Dear KSCC team,

Nice to know the good work you have been doing to repatriate people .
I need to travel to Bangalore but since there are very scarce flights to Bangalore
I don't mind traveling through Mangalore . I have my first cousins staying in
Bantwal. I can take the 7 day quarantine at your facility and the remaining 7 days at Bantwal.

I need you to help me as I have lost my job and I need to get back as my
    family is waiting for me.

    My contact is 050 5851320.

For so many years NRI people were asking MIA and government to allow international carriers from other countries to land at Mangalore airport. As the fare of international carriers particularly from the middle east was cheaper.

But we were fooled telling that MIA is a tabletop airport and it is not possible to land. So every time we had to depend on the Air India Express for travel. But the Corona brought the change and we had flights from Emirates, Gulf Air, Air Arabia, Al Jazeera, Salam air landing at Mangalore. The Air India Express, Spicejet, Indigo were nowhere to see as the Charted flights were cheaper than those of India.

This proves that there was no problem with the MIA tabletop airport. But the government authorities and Indian airlines wanted to mint money. Else how can they allow the same flights to land now?

This is a good example for us and people should insist that more international carriers are allowed to enter Mangalore airways and the airport. We should pressurize our local government and political leaders to prevail on the concerned to continue these flights to Mangalore which will make air travel cheaper

KSCC has done a great job. Commentators here need to understand difference between Chartered flight and flights operated under Vande Bharat Mission.

Indians are doing a great job in repatriating their fellow Indians stranded due to various reasons abroad. Under Vande Bharat, Air India is operating 1000 flights from over 43 countries, that attempt by Philanthropists under Chartered category may not be possible. Appreciate efforts all round!

Thank you to Shafi, Althaf, Javed, Naseer of KSCC and other volunteers who made this happen.

It is amazing too how ordinary citizens, busy struggling with their own lives, have volunteered to make this flight happen - without expecting any rewards for this work.
