PM should brief oppn on Nepal map row, demands Congress

New Delhi, Jun 10 (IANS): After Nepal's House of Representatives endorsed the new map which has Indian territory, the Congress has said it is a matter of "national concern" and demanded that the government take the nation into confidence and brief other political parties, as is expected in a parliamentary democracy.

Former Union Minister and Rajya Sabha member Anand Sharma said: "The recent developments in the India-Nepal relations and the dispute over the Kalapani-Lipulekh area, following the publication of a new map by Nepal depicting the area as Nepalese Territory is a matter of national concern."

The Congress leader demanded that the Centre take the "nation into confidence, and brief the leadership of the political parties," as is expected in a parliamentary democracy.

The Congress said that India and Nepal share a historic and time-tested relationship marked by mutual respect, friendship and trust. The strong cultural ties and shared traditions between the people of India and Nepal make the relationship unique and special.

Both the countries have invested enormously in nurturing and promoting a strategic partnership recognizing and respecting each other's sensitivities, it said, adding that India and Nepal have an established bilateral mechanism to resolve any dispute and differences through negotiations.

"It is regrettable, that the present impasse has reached a stage, which has strained the friendly relationship. This needs to be addressed urgently. India has always respected the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nepal," Sharma added.

Congress said that both countries have successfully settled 98 per cent of common border issues. "There is an expressed willingness on both sides to settle all disputes in the same spirit of close friendship and mutual trust. Congress party is of considered view, that diplomacy and negotiations must be given a chance to resolve the present issue."

India and Nepal, as neighbours and natural partners, should secure and protect the precious goodwill built over the years between the two countries, in view of the seriousness of the issue and the significance of India-Nepal relations, said the Congress statement.

From last 6 decades of Rule, Congress could not even build a compound wall for our territory!
Now when someone is trying to encroach, to hide their failure, they are putting pressure on Sriman Modi. India is too big. If some one encroaches a few hectares of the mountains, it will not affect Congress!!!

From last 6 decades of Rule, requirement of building fence did not arise because Nepal was like another state of India and there was free movement of people of both countries. Nepal did not had the courage to stand up against India.

Foreign policy of present regime has failed completely and all our neighbours are more friendly with China than India. Being such a strong country we are not able to keep our neighbours together with us. Never in the history of India we have faced such situation. Only doing event and tamasha with US is not the foreign policy but when the egoist leader will understand this?

Dear Anamika, all those who wanted to be friendly with China have become its slaves. China is not a friend to anyone they just use them. All small nations have been trapped by china by corrupting their leaders. We are lucky to Have Modiji who didn't take any financial help from China. Same as Srilanka, Maldives and other countries in the future Nepal also realize what mistake they did. There is no doubt if we see Nepal inside china's map also. lol

Well said Anamika. Some people only know how to erect fence between neighbours, brothers, families, religions, regions for their own benefit.

Shankar, I notice your comical comment again as usual.
Your comment "From last 6 decades of Rule, Congress could not even build a compound wall for our territory!" made me to laugh loudly that I never thought there will be so damn blind bhakths around.
Can you explain to me if at all how long it will take to build compound wall for our territory?? 5 years, may be 10 years??
Out of roughly 74 years since Congress ruled 54 years and the opposition, including your beloved BJP, ruled 20 years. Why they failed to build that compound to our territory?? Please explain, I check each and every news paper, not just Indian, but around the world every day and I will not miss your reply.
Nations are not built by compound but by relationships. That's why Congress had good relationship with our neighbours. Whose foreign policy made the same neighbours enemies now?? Why do you spend money on defense if compound is enough?
As you claimed, "Now when someone is trying to encroach", why someone encroach now?? Why not when Congress was in Power for 55 years?? What the defense forces doing there on border when some one encroach??
SWATI, if China is not a friend to anyone, then can you enlighten all of us, why the Chinese President been invited to Ahmadabad?, to play kutti donne? Was Modi is a slave of China then? Why the same Nepal was firmly with India during all these years??
Is your comment "We are lucky to Have Modiji who didn't take any financial help from China" valid in any way?? So, we are lucky we have Modiji as if all other PM of India were going around with a begging bowl to China. Your dear Modiji did helped Chinese by creating jobs for them to erect a statue in Gujarat, did you forgot that?

No other regional power is as disconnected from its immediate neighbourhood as India. The present government has alienated Bangladesh and Nepal and is also gradually losing sway over Srilanka and Myanmar. This is a far cry from when Modi started and even GDP also gradually soaring and slipping behind further day by day against its tiny neigbors. At this moment the fotmatted of unplanned new india served infront of us with full of uncertainties

Nepal and China are not deterred from claiming Indian territory by Modi's strongman image. China and Nepal view Modi as a paper lion.

The RSS political wing BJP has the maps of 'Akhand Bharat' which even shows Afghanistan and Pakistan.
If BJP can't even manage the Nepal diplomacy, then why does it need CAA Bill to bring Hindus from those so called prosecuted nations?
As far as BJP, it is only interested in maps of politics to topple governments to create Hindu Rashtra, were millions of migrant workers will be made to walk on foot without food, water and medicines.
