Mangaluru: Pumpwell-Padil road to be developed at a cost of Rs 26 crore

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 6: The main road between Pumpwell and Padil that is mostly used by vehicles to enter the city, will be developed at a cost of Rs 26 crore under the Smart City Project.

This project was approved at the Smart City Project's city level advisory forum meeting held on Friday June 5 at the office of the deputy commissioner here. The meeting was chaired by MP Nalin Kumar Kateel.

The participants in the meeting were of the opinion that the development of this 2,800-metre long road needs to be undertaken forthwith. They pointed out that grant has been set aside for this purpose under Smart City Project and at many places, widening of the road is found almost impossible. It was decided to utilise the money that will remain unspent for developing additional connecting roads.

Nalin Kumar noted that tender has already been floated for the construction of an ultra-modern bus station at Pumpwell under Private Public Participation model. He noted that there is time till July 27 to submit the tenders. He felt that there is a need to also develop the service bus stand near State Bank and wanted the concerned to take a decision on it soon. Kateel felt that enforcing one-way traffic from the Clock Tower to A B Shetty Circle is not practicable. He felt that the traffic problem might aggravate as density of population is dense near State Bank market area.

"Gujjarakere will be developed at a cost of four crore rupees, and the one at Kavoor will be developed by spending eight crore rupees. Kadri Park development works at a cost of Rs 12 crore has been undertaken. A sum of Rs 24.94 crore will be used to build an international level swimming pool and development of community level facilities," said Smart City managing director Muhammed Nazeer.

He also informed that upgradation work at a cost of ten crore rupees will be undertaken at Mangala Stadium and Central Market will be developed at a cost of Rs 145 crore. A sum of Rs 114 crore will be spent for developing water supply distribution system implementation in the city, he explained.

MLA Vedavyas Kamath, spoke on the occasion, deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh, deputy commissioner of the city corporation Santhosh Kumar, and members of Smart City Advisory Forum were present.

Portion of road from Pumpwell to Padil was recently concretised. Again spending on the same road ?? So many people died in accidents at nanthor and daily traffic jam. Still no measures taken to solve this. Government needs to utilise funds as per requirement and not for other hidden benefits. After all people pay taxes. Utilise wisely.

Any project in which politicos, be they Congress or BJP, have a big hand is bound to be wasteful, to call it a plunder of the public money would be more apt. In this instance the public would be lucky if they get ten crore worth of development on 26 crore collected either by way of tax or public debt. Of course, by the time it is completed the cost would have ballooned to a 100 crore.

Upon checking with a PWD contractor what he said below:
"friend to get an contract we need to grease the palms
Once we get the tender approved to receive the initial funds gain grease required,
finally before completing the work we need satisfy many friends and co-friends,
finally our work need to be dine passing by engineer! there too without palm grease you will not get an approval-passing certificate".
Finally he said 'now you tell me what quality work you need to provide, after squishing more than 60% allotted funds to project goes in drain

It is better to have one bus stand for the whole city. If it is coming up at pumpwel it is better to have city and well as service combo bus stand at pumpwel.with this, the vehicular confession at state bank can be avoided a so as loss of lives.

These development works are good. Hope entire money will be used for these works. For overall development of our City, few other important works below need to be completed:
    1) Mangaluru railway station to be upgraded and new zone with Mangaluru as headquarters to be implemented
    2) international airport needs to be upgraded with additional flights, creating demand is very important
    3) Port to be upgraded with international level infrastructure facilities
    4) Mangaluru to Bengaluru highway is very important for development of this region. Priority to be given and pending works to be completed regarding 4 way road in this entire stretch. The distance of travel was supposed to reduce to 4 to 5 hours, but nothing has changed.
    5) Have IT majors like Wipro, TCS, Accenture, HCL etc. to set up offices in Mangaluru
    6) land to be indentified and international cricket stadium to be built
    7) also believe DK district to be renamed as Mangaluru district. This would create larger boundary area and ensure development works across the district.

Instead of spending 26 crores, I feel it is better to construct a Flyover from Pumpwell to Padil.. In future our DC office will come in Padil. So more traffic on that road. Secondly to widen the road,so many problems will raise. Instead of all problems to overcome, I suggest a beautiful Flyover. Because we are going towards Smart city.
