Udupi: BRS expresses inability - Government to appoint doctors to Koosamma Hospital

Udupi, May 11: B R S Health Research Institute Pvt Ltd has approached the state government, expressing its inability to manage the government Koosamma Shambhu Shetty Memorial Haji Abdullah Mother and Child Hospital here. As such, the government has issued orders to appoint obstetricians and children specialists to the hospital.

The hospital built by NRI entrepreneur B R Shetty, was inaugurated by the then chief minister Siddaramaiah, and health minister Ramesh Kumar, on November 19, 2017. The hospital was being monitored by a committee headed by the district deputy commissioner. BRS institute was in charge of appointing staff and other maintenance. But the institute has now said that it is unable to run the hospital.

Dr B R Shetty, NRI entrepreneur from Udupi, who had founded NMC Health institutes at Abu Dhabi, has resigned from his post. The government there has frozen his accounts. Therefore, the hospital is facing funds crunch.

The hospital, located opposite the municipal building here, is located on a 4.07 acres plot. This land was given to BRS institute on a 30 year lease with option to further extend lease by another 30 years. The institute had entered into an agreement with the government and health and family welfare department.

Additional deputy commissioner Sadashiva Prabhu, said that BRS institute had written to the state government expressing its inability to run the said hospital and the government has issued order to appoint obstetricians and children specialists to the hospital.

    This is sad. I have seen this hospital and i sincerely wish Mr BR shetty is able to take over the management soon. I cant think of govt running such top class hospital.

    its a huge..huge loss for the people of Udupi. He was lifeline for Karnataka sangha, tulu koota indian school, involved in Cricket, throw ball, everything . A bundle of high energy even at 78. In Abudhabi he was kind of de fecto indian ambassador for 40 years. Udupi lucky to get a hospital from BRS for free. now that he cant manage , the govt must run it without loosing the benefits. hope such a beautiful hospital will not go waste. the only way is to hand it over to private hospitals. if not soon it will become Udupi bus stand.
