Mangaluru: Cracks develop on Pumpwell flyover, reportedly due to rain

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Apr 26: Cracks have appeared on Pumpwell flyover, reportedly due to the rains that lashed the city early morning on Saturday, April 25.

In addition to the cracks, the rain water has accumulated on both sides of the service road. The water was removed in a hurry using JCB machine.

The movement of vehicles on the flyover has lessened due to the lockdown over coronavirus pandemic. People are of the opinion that the cracks in the flyover will invite danger when the traffic increases once the lockdown gets over.

It is said that the unscientific work carried out in the construction of the flyover is the cause of these cracks. The flyover was thrown open to public in the beginning of this year after 10 years since the launch of the project and repeated delays. The last few months saw the work being taken up at a hurried pace in order to meet the January 31 deadline.

The unseasonal rain that lashed the city on Saturday was moderate compared to the heavy downpour that the city usually witnesses during the monsoon season. If the cracks indeed developed due to the rain, the authorities would need to take immediate measures to ensure that no further damage is done during the upcoming rainy season.

In a lighter vein, it could be the cracks appeared because bridge was lying idle for so long; when fully loaded 24/7, the cracks may automatically tend to disappear??

Yes!! I would blame Navayug and ask them to repair at their own cost and not use tax payers money. It is their responsibility to ensure that they build in proper manner maintaining quality of highest standards when crores of rupees are swallowed.

Let the Law be enforced on culprits to fix the cracks before any danger happens to public. Its a shame on politicians and stakeholders who support this construction company when there is no warranty for the work!!

Looks like the soil below the friction slab and/or on the approach ramp is eroding away due to poor consolidation. The approach ramp of this flyover is built on reinforced earth panel technology which requires a fair bit of experise to handle. I hope that proper care was taken to ensure that the work was done properly here in this regard. Within the last one year they have been two instances where similar problems (one in Bengaluru and one more elsewhere in India) have led to serious catastrophic damage to the flyovers. I hope some one with a conscious mind stops the traffic movement in the flyover temporarily and gets this whole flyover inspected by a third party specialist agency like STUP. They must suggest any remidial measures if any needed. finally Fitness certificate must be issued on the same by the agency after all rectifications are done. This could be quite serious if unattended.

The old bridge in Gurupura is one of the oldest bridge in the district built in 1923, across the River Phalguni on Nanthoor-Moodbidri-Karkala National Highway 169, connecting Mangaluru still serving the nation.
This pumpwell flyover construction began back in September 2010 at an estimated cost of Rs 671 crore is started showing cracks even there is limited vehicular movement, even before Mansoon and earthquake reported.
In India centuries old temple built by Cholas, Marathas and British, French, Portugesse build infrastructure and Mughal and Rajput built architecture with no maintains is still standing and giving revenue to the nation.
Now blame the 70 years of rule of Congress for Rs610 crores substandard construction.

It is time for Mangalorean to start petition for investigation for this exorbitantly high cost construction that exceeds the International standard high way construction cost per kilometre and still bridge collapses even before the heavy transport had been tested.

Most of Daijiworld readers seem to have traveled abroad. If we are not ashamed of the third-grade work of our flyovers, we need to doubt the standard we have sent for ourselves. Has our MLAs/MP seen some of the bridges/flyovers of Europe, America, Singapore? They don't have the non-sense breaking the coconut to inaugurate them, but they are stronger, clean and beautiful. If we have illiterate leaders and we want to elect leaders because of their religion or caste, we will have more of this third grade works.
