Mangaluru: Tollgates begin collecting fee from vehicles

Mangaluru, Apr 21: Collection of toll charges from vehicles resumed after remaining suspended for a few days due to lockdown, on Monday, April 20 at all the toll gates. The tollgates began their work after getting clearance from National Highways Authority of India.

The project director of National Highways Authority of India Shishu Mohan stated that vehicles are allowed to pass through the toll gates with effect from Sunday midnight after they pay the charges. He said that as police checkposts are located on both sides of the toll gates, unauthorized vehicles are stopped by the police and only authorised ones approach the tollgates.

The tollgates at Talapady, Suratkal, Sastan, Hejamady and Bantwal became operational on Monday. This has been done to breathe life into the economic situation in the country, it is being analyzed.

At Sastan tollgate in Udupi district, the vehicles struggled to go through the tollgate as only two gates were open and there was considerable movement of vehicles between 7 am and 11 am. Some people who found it hard to go to their workplace or attend to other work during relaxation hours, demanded the opening of more gates so that the vehicles need not wait for long at the tollgate.

    When everybody is sitting at home jobless without income these people want to make money.... Coudnt the government give relaxation till the end of lockdown ??? Was it an emergency??? Nobody knows when the pandemic will end and our money is precious now every rupee counts...

    I feel we are simply spoiling our energy... Even corona will vanish some day but corruption will never vanish... When the world ends corruption will end too...

    Anna it is is the government that has given permission to reopen tolls in our intelligent district... We have not asked for it.... If they had given us the liberty to decide we the intelligent people would have refused and rejected right away...

    It is unfortunate to see the usual route for KA 19 vehicles to pass without toll payment was shut yesterday when I went to Mangalore for treatment. I was unaware of the toll conditions as has not travelling to Mangalore for the past 1 month or more. Looking at the closed corner gate which was earlier for KA 19 registered vehicles without payment of fees was locked. So I took the lane with had mentioned as cash payments without going to Fast Tag lane. When I reached hospital and watched the mobile Rs. 55 was deducted without my knowledge. There was a toll number to contact if any service was not satisfactory. I phoned and it went to MP and one lady spoke to me. She put me on hold and finally informed that the amount is deducted but they can't do anything as they are only to issue fast tag collections via banks. I contacted a leader from Mangalore through my contact where I came to know that the government had plans to charge since 3 months but were delayed and were not informed to commuters too. Without informing the communters I do not understand how far it is right on governments side to charge the fee for KA 19 vehicle which were allowed free earlier. It seems the government has taken this COVID 19 as plus point to charge and continue charging without even informing the commuters above this decision. This is how government and local representatives are taking the advantage of making money during the pandemic situation as it does not affect them any way. So sorry to see this and government hidden agenda to collect the fees from locals too who are in this situation cannot fight for their rights. So sad.

    People can't come out to protest, so best opportunity to introduce/resume collecting all toll and taxes. We are there to serve the government, any way. And to serve the politicians!
