Mangaluru: Lockdown effect - People buy vegetables directly from agriculturist

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Apr 11: It seems like the luck of agriculturist Lawrence D'Souza, a resident of Guttakadu near Kinnigoli, has clicked after the announcement of lock down. He was struggling to get good price for the vegetables that he grows in his yard during normal times, but the lockdown has brought good times for him as people are visiting his house to buy vegetables paying good prices for the same.

Lawrence D'Souza is well educated and is well trained in computer. He had worked as a computer teacher for some years. He had opened a cyber center in Kinnigoli. He is trained in the latest technology in videographics and used take videography of marriages and also produce short films.

After the death of his parents, Lawrence, who is a loner, got himself completely involved in agriculture. He owns 14 acres of land out of which, five acres is forest. He has kept it as such and used only seven acres for growing vegetable and fruits. He has dug well and borewell so there is no scarcity of water.

Lawrence is growing vegetables since the last two years and used to sell the same to the shops of Kinnigoli. But he was not getting proper price for his effort. Now after lockdown, as the shops are closed, people are coming directly to his house and buying vegetables from him. As the word is spread around the area about Lawrence, more and more people are buying vegetables and fruits from him.

As the rates are reasonable and demand is good, the vegetables and fruits at Lawrence’s place is getting over within noon. He is using only home-made manure for the produce. As he is involved whole day in agriculture work, he is happy. Lawrence says that in addition to effort, he gets to live in clean environment which has kept him healthy. He urges all the youth to get into agriculture rather than going to foreign countries to earn their livelihood.

Farmers around Karnataka were forced to throw home grown vegetables, milk and fruits due to lock down.

There is no clear policy as to market the produce of these hard working farmers around us, who are discouraged from continuing farming activities as a whole.

Good hear the success story of IT specialist and passionate farmer Lawrance, who had faced immense challenges in his farming business, notably not being able to get the right prices for his hard work.

Let us hope authorities take note of him and his likes and make farming a viable proposition in these hard times.

    Jai Hind!!!!!

Best news I have read today, yes, more of us should get into growing food because in the near future food will cost higher than fuel. Lawrence, if you read this, try and make an appointment with Varnashi Farms near Puttur. They are certified organic and the growers are scientists. Their method of water conservation has led to increase in surrounding water table. It's more or less a self sufficient farm. Am pretty sure you can find more ways to increase your income while simultaneously improving the quality of your soil organically. Best wishes.

Congratulations Lawrence. Hats off to you a Science Graduate, having vast knowledge in Computers and a professional Photographer, you proved to be real " Mannina Maga". Lock down may not bring you a windfall. But you are a role model for others. Guttha Kadu as the name speaks is a remote village. When labour is a scarcity, you have toiled hard. When unemployment is rising, you chose to be self employed. Keep it up.

Trust me A LOT and I mean LOTS AND LOTS who had migrated from Kinnigoli and such places for " Greener Pastures " would like to be back home now !
Back actually where the real " Green " is.......
This should teach many that the value of Green Bucks is virtually ' NIL '
' ZERO'.If this does not teach nothing would !
The meaning of "Greener Pastures " too would be re written I believe.
It's a bit perplexing to note many in the advanced countries and their followers here talk about stuff like ' Economy , Stock Markets ' etc in times like these.
This article definitely throws light on where we can still find refuge in ,in the most difficult of times.
    Carry on Larry ...

I would say this is positive affect of the lock down. This will ensure the minimum supportive price for the farmers for their efforts. At the same time consumers can get fresh organic products of their satisfaction.

Lawrence D'Souza may be lucky amongst the few as he growing vegetables in a town where not many growers are there. But I pity those large number of farmers who are unable to sell their produce due to lockdown. Most of it is getting rotten and making them financially fragile.

Great..but he said ; He urges all the youth to get into agriculture rather than going to foreign countries to earn their livelihood.

Not everyone owns land, most of us living in paycheck to paycheck.
If there is no job, means no source of income!

Looking out job in abroad is going to be a dream hereafter this pandemic.
Economy is in bad shame, young passouts are going to be jobless...life sucks!
