Lockdown likely to be extended, suggests PM Modi at all-party meeting

New Delhi, Apr 8 (IANS): In what can be seen as a movement towards extension of the ongoing shutdown, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday told all the floor leaders of various parties in the Parliament that the kind of response and suggestions he has received does not indicate that the lockdown should be lifted, said sources.

The Prime Minister is also slated to meet the Chief Ministers of all the states and Union Territories on April 11, through video conference, where a final decision on the issue is slated to be made. This will be the third such conference with the CMs.

In the last such meeting, the PM talked about a common exit plan and asked all CMs to form a task force who will give suggestions. On April 11, all Chief Ministers will be back with the suggestions their task force have given them.

Meanwhile, more CMs have been cautioning PM Modi against an abrupt lifting of the shutdown. Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao earlier made a strong case for the extension of the ongoing lockdown. He also cited reports of the Boston Consulting Group survey, which asked for ruthless measures like extension of the lockdown till June.

A day after, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had called for phased withdrawal, if necessary.

When PM Modi told mostly opposition floor leaders on Wednesday that the suggestions he received were against lifting the shutdown, he was citing suggestions from KCR and Gehlot - both of whom are from non-NDA parties.

The Centre on Tuesday also held a Group of Ministers meeting at Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's residence which did not take any decision on ending the shutdown. The biggest question in front of the government was weighing in two options -- loss of livelihood versus loss of life. But increasingly, it seems the argument of KCR that "economy can be rebuilt but lives can't be brought back" resonates with the government.

There is a strong buzz that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may address the nation, once again, on April 11 or 12, after a consensus on the future of shutdown is reached during the CMs conference.

India is on a 21 day nationwide total shutdown that ends on April 14. The unusual move was taken to contain the spread of the deadly coronavirus. As of Wednesday afternoon, India has 4,643 active COVID-19 cases while 149 died due to the illness.

An economy is akin to a machine which can turn on & off! It's like a living organism driven by choices made by humans; therefore longer the "complete lockdown", the trickier the tool of revival much like a comatose human!!

    Good decision
Airports are the root cause/min hotspots. Whatever you open but airports must remain closed atleast till April 30. It is so easy to understand that when around 150peopleare inside for more than 1hour, virus spreads gradually

Our PM and ofcourse the thousands of police, health department workers and many other people from all walks of life, have handled the situation fairly well. An operation of such magnitude is not an easy task. Lockdown is an easy word but the repurcussions are huge unimaginable. However there are still a few things we could have done better. Especially should have taken measures to somehow send people from other districts and states to their homes. This if done in a organized way, would have ensured the people to spend the lockdown with the family without the insecurity if food and shelter. Also a few people venturing out without reason must be dealt with a strong action.

Today Wuhan in China has opened up. They were locked down for 76 days! to ensure there is no 'people to people' meet and contain the spread. I believe in India which is way way bigger than the Province that houses Wuhan , would require a similar if not more number of days. As per sources, this lock down would be in phases till mid June.

Cos to buy commodities cash is required...to pay electricity cash is required...for basic things cash is required...when things were open money could be rotated? Now what to do? A rabbit lived in the forest,he would run into his burrow if there was a slightest sound.Once while he was wandering a berry fell on his head.He started running,on the way he met a dog who asked him why are you running? The rabbit said the sky is falling. The dog started running with the rabbit.A little ahead they met a cat and an elephant, lion tiger etc and all started running, until they met a clever jackal, who convinced them that the sky was not falling. This is known a mass hysteria.Corona-fear- lockdown-panic-shortages-unemployment....

FYI, UK PM Boris Johnson was of the same opinion as you. He was calling social distancing, lock down and panic as 'Herd Mentality' and even did not impose lock downs, social distancing guidelines in the UK till the last moment. Now see his and his country's state. It's not sky is falling but we see our own dying in front of our eyes and prohibited to go to the funeral. Does this sound real to you???..

Majority of these Whites are highly deficient in Vitamin D, which is actually a hormone & takes part in 300 processes in the human body! Best Vit D is produced by irradiation of sterols under the skin due to sunlight; with hardly any exposure to sunlight, they have a high deficiency of Vit D, which plays a very important role in fortifying the immune system; so also Vit B12 and other micronutrient deficiency!

Best solution to defend Corona is to build a very tough immune system! The more care you take, the more you try not to expose to the natural elements, the more chemicals you use (like medicated soaps, shampoos, mouthwashes etc), the more weak your immune system will be (hygiene hypothesis)!! Those mother's who give birth by vaginal (natural) delivery have much healthy children than those born by Cesarean S!

Dear Monty, it's very logical and true; a person who has survived by drinking tap/open well water, eaten stale food, eating roadside chat, ice cream made from filter paper, ice goals made from dirty water, waded through neck deep gutter waters of Mumbai for miles, no water to wash hands after ablution, no soap to have bath; birth in the house with chimney light, playing in dirty mud getting wounded and only applying turmeric powder or red solution (mercurochrome), etc, how can he not defeat CORONA?

Till 15 days ago (14+1) we travelled in public transport with almost body contact, shopped in malls, markets etc within kissing distance; now, how can one believe till that day nobody was getting infected, and suddenly infection started multiplying after that? (Mumbai population density in some pockets is 73k/square mile)??? Did many victims die from Corona w/o our knowledge of Corona?

A great and very meaningful story, Monty Dotor.

It is a tragedy that people do not want to make some rational thinking...

...instead, as you put perfectly well, people just love to fall into mass hysteria.

With basic commonsense, like what they did in Taiwan, Indian economy/employment would have remained perfectly normal.

Just for the record, Taiwan is a densely populated place.

Cynthia, nobody can escape this virus as of date; only saviour is your immune system, of course along with the best precautions you can take, rest is luck! In such catch 22 situation practice mindfulness:

    What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness can be described as the practice of paying attention in the present moment, and doing it intentionally and with non-judgment. Mindfulness meditation practices refer to the deliberate acts of regulating attention through the observation of thoughts, emotions and body states. Typical mindfulness activities include:

Mindful non-judgmental awareness of breath, body, feelings, emotions and/or thoughts (in sitting meditation practice or throughout the day)
    Mindful walking meditation
    Mindful eating
Mindful body scan in a sitting or lying down position
    Listening with non-judgment!

Rest, leave it on the creator after doing your best!

This is a catch 22 situation considering the number of trapped people and the fact that 78% of India's workforce is employed in the informal sector having no financial security whatsoever! With source of income drying up, these 78% will be pushed against the wall; for them, both ways end result will be same!

Centre must give pause or break of few days for people, who are stuck in different places.Death due to hunger and lack of other essential commodities will be higher compared to the death due to the corona virus.Since everybody not getting or having access to aid by government, since people's stuck in different parts of india doesn't come under poverty line, nor a student or migrant worker.
