Lockdown may get extended as PM Modi government 'considering requests'

New Delhi, Apr 7 (IANS): Multiple state governments and experts have requested the Central Government to extend the ongoing 21-day lockdown further and the Modi government is considering their suggestions, say government sources.

This comes a day after Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao made a strong case for the extension of the ongoing lockdown. Rao had advocated for the extension of the current shutdown saying, "The Centre and all other State Governments have lost revenue during the lockdown period. The only positive outcome of this is that we are able to protect our people."

KCR also cited reports of the Boston Consulting Group survey, which asked for ruthless measures like extension of the lockdown till June.

The government's group of ministers on Tuesday met at Defense minister Rajnath Singh's residence where the issue of post shutdown scenario came up but no decision was taken on when to end it, said sources who attended the meeting.

The biggest question in front of the government is weighing in two options -- loss of livelihood versus loss of life. However, any decision in this regard will come after Prime Minister Modi's meeting with floor leaders and chief ministers where a common exit plan is to be discussed.

IANS reported on April 2 itself that the lockdown may not just end on April 14 itself, as initially planned. Prime Minister Modi was believed to have told chief ministers in his last CM conference that it is a 'long drawn battle', something he reiterated on Monday while he was addressing party cadres on the occasion of the BJP's Foundation Day.

Soon after the CM conference by Prime Minister, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, from his Twitter account, declared: "The Prime Minister said that the State Government should not lift the lockdown immediately from April 15 but it should happen in phases. Precautions should be taken that there is no crowding."

However, the government hasn't made any assertion so far whether it is going to extend the current lockdown or not. But government sources have indeed confirmed that the Modi government is considering the requests to extend the shutdown.

For how long will the second lap of extension be if extension takes place, is still premature, insists the source. Any decision will be taken after the next chief ministers conference when each CM will come back with their own exit plans after forming task forces, as requested by PM Modi. Also there is a meeting by Modi scheduled with floor leaders of Parliament which may be used to build a consensus decision rather than an imposed decision.

Government sources indicate that the situation was complicated ever since the Tablighi Jamaat congregation led to steep rise in coronavirus infections as well as fatality tally.

As on Tuesday morning, India has surpassed 4400 coronavirus cases with 114 deaths at least.

Let us follow rules and regulations of Govt. keeping social distance, Avoid crowding, not going outside unnecessarily etc. and try to bring down the coronavirus cases to the barest minimum or complete erase it. If this is done and followed by all I think there is no necessity of lock down.

Some "experts" had decided that 21 days lockdown will destroy the lifecycle of the virus,if the lockdown is extended it would mean that they have been horribly wrong. Corona is not a dreaded disease, the mortality is less than 4% and death in these unfortunate patients was caused by other concomitant disease.Remeber an old couple above 80 had survived the virus also an infant survived. There is unnecessary panic and fear. The contrarian view is allow the virus it's own natural course and it would be self limiting, because immunity develops in the population. More people would have died because they did not get medicines for diabetes, blood pressure and other illnesses that could be controlled with medicine, many have committed suicide, many have died while migrating back home including an accident that claimed 10 lives recently. Many fear that death due to these conditions outnumber the deaths due to Corona. If lockdown is extended God forbid, but there could be deaths due to hunger and morbidity due to malnutrition.Vehicular accidents cause maximum deaths ,but you do not close roads ,do you? This corona is not like smallpox or Ebola.Lockdown is effective only when a small area is affected not after it has spread all over.Be Happy Be Healthy Do not panic Corona will disappear.

Exactly; until March 22nd, CORONA related deaths were just around 0.1% compared to other reasons like lifestyle diseases, cancer, accidents, pre & postnatal, malnutrition, infectious diseases, medical errors, adverse drug reactions, etc. Main cause is weakened immune system, chronic deficiency of vitamin D, B12, micronutrients etc, genetic susceptibility, comorbid factors, advanced age!!

Just see the population density in our metros; slum pockets like Dharavi, Govandi, etc in Mumbai & apply logic!!

Dear Monty, as you said since the infection is already spread in the general population, complete lockdown will be counterproductive considering our poverty!

If there were no new cases reported for consecutive 14 days in a particular locality then the lockdown in that area should be relaxed but no movement in and out of that area.

Lock down and social distancing is applicable to all effect. Maintain at least 2 metre distance from another person. Ask your women folks in your house to wear face mask covering the entire face.

    Kaayen bheeyanakaa .....
Everything has a cause ....I tell you for you have invoked God.
An editor had written a story about how Nelson Mandela was kept in solitary confinement for 18 years in a cell where he could hardly move....The only thing he had for company were bare essentials and a broken mattress to sleep on ...The only sight he could see was the lashing of waves it seems ! 18 years !! And he was fighting a cause !!
    Compare this to ours !
Think we need to draw inspiration from such stories at present !
Mandela Sir was fighting for others ...we for our own survival !
This is but just one story !
Think of those who were imprisoned for years on end so that we could get our freedom !
It is time we realize the importance of free movement and the true meaning of Freedom and never take it for Granted !
There is a lesson to be learnt in Everything !
Life teaches and we remain students till the end.
The day learning stops everything stops.
    God bless .

Let us make a fair decision...
end lockdown on April 22nd 1am. Exactly after 1 month. With restrictions like social distancing, without public transport, train, aircraft..

Then let the respective district heads take whatever decision they want!
