Mangaluru: MCC decision of home delivery of essentials gets poor response from agents

Mangaluru, Mar 30: Earlier, Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) released a list of over 180 provision stores and supermarkets that will home-deliver groceries and other essential items to apartments and houses in all the 60 wards in the city from Monday, March 30, for the convenience of citizens who are facing tough times because of the nationwide lockdown.

However, there was an underwhelming response from the delivery agents as they did not respond to the calls of the public. Several complaints poured in stating that delivery agents were not responding to the calls. Some agents stated that the groceries were out of stock, while others stated lack of staff for delivering the groceries to doorsteps.

The poor response from the delivery agents triggered confusion among the public as to whom they could approach for groceries to be delivered at their doorsteps.

A meeting of representatives from different supermarkets and provision stores and other retailers was convened by MCC commissioner Ajit Shanady to discuss the plan. It was decided that the supply of essentials to the doorsteps would begin from Monday, March 30.

As many as 20 teams were formed by MCC to deliver essential supplies to citizens in the 60 wards. Each team would be undertaking the responsibility of three wards.

    Hi
    We sent grocery request to 2-3 stores and waiting from 3 days. They are not answering our call and no reply for our message (what's app) . We are confused and worried will they deliver or not. Very very poor response from store people.

    None of the Supermarkets or Hypermarkets and other vendors listed by MCC and published here as ONLINE delivery responded to our telephone calls. Time to switch on to ONLINE DELIVERY of GROCERIES / SUPERMARKET and daily essentials like e-learning from schools to avoid over crowding and chaos in markets and shops.

    The following steps may be given a try to mitigate the problems faced by the general public to procure the daily ration.

    1. Keep open all the grocery malls (only big stores like spar, big bazaar etc) 24 hours and small stores between 6am to 8pm.

    2. Allow people with 2 wheelers n commoners to buy grocery between 6.00am - 4.00pm and 4 wheelers between 4pm to 10pm.

    3. Allow only one person from each of d family during marketing n make wearing of protective masks compulsory (atleast with kerchief).

    4. District administration shud take help of the volunteers from each ward to oversee implementation of the steps introduced.

    4. This will not only reduce overcrowding by the public for marketing of the grocery during the limited relax period but also possible to implement the needed social precautions.

    Perhaps this will likely to ease the problems faced by the general populace to procure daily ration without worrying too much thereby ending d present chaos.

    IMPT: Allow all d stores to open between these periods without any harassment n make them to mark minimum of 4feet distance to maintain social distancing strictly infront of their shops.

    From where will you organize the manpower? Who will pay for the fuel? This would end up being a logistical nightmare. It's funny to see that people living in apartments are worried. What about the others? Looking at the number of shops enlisted, the shop owners cannot manage such a thing.

    I believe that grocery/essential items shop owners should be allowed to open and allow them to deliver basic items to their respective customers. Old age people are suffering much . customers should not be allowed to visit shops. Some ideas here and there will help out

    I would like to point out that some owners of the retail stores are not ready to deliver as they didn't get any official order / passes from the administration. This will get better.. I feel more coordination is required.

    Simple and easy, Transfer 25,000 rupees to each and every family and allow them buy and store food and life saving items for another 2 weeks.

    Who ever wants to come out of house for any emergency let them update details on the APP full filling all the details.

    Educate people and give them hopes.

    Let police help people and government to make this social distance success rather than hitting and beating normal people those who came out for emergency cases.

    Your suggestions are good !
    Somewhere you mentioned that "educate people and give them hopes". Most of us know that media, Police, DC, State and Central Govt. and many others are educating people to stay indoors, maintain social distance, wear mask, use sanitizers and don't go for merry rides etc....But what about results ? People throng to veg. market, mad rush in non veg counters, suicide caes for want of Liquor...as if there is no tomorrow.

    I feel that People to get "educated themselves"; only then this will be a great success in eradication of corona virus.

    Delivery of his magnitude is logistical nightmare. Overthinking kills a simple solution. The simple solution was for MCC to organise supply chain to grocery stores and the police to implment social distancing in the grocery shops. A section 144 for people on road was sufficient

    At the moment it looks like the list of super-markets and stores was obtained from 'just-dial' website and thrown out to the public without any co-ordination. If MCC was taking charge, then why distribute a list ? Where is the delivery app that the minister announced ? Why can't someone take full control and manage this properly and if this is successful then glory will go to MCC.

    I am sure even the owners & agents of super-markets and stores in the published list must be going crazy inundated with continuous calls from people (with genuine food supply requirements of-course).

    Request the official to first ensure if basics such as Kaje rice is available in the proximity. Since it's the end if the month people will be ordering for the month. Next, use the delivery networks if zomato and Swiggy. Assign them areas for minor deliveries. Third, for 50 kg plus rice, in each area a temp or an auto can be contacted to deliver the same.

    Will residents of apartments and independent houses be approached or they should approach the agents directly?
    If first, there wouldn't be difficulty to get supplies, just fill in form whatever is the requirement and fulfilled by agents
    If second, the agents will be overwhelmed by the number of calls and stock limit exceeded. Not great idea.
    Logistics and supply chain should be strong point before starting this initiative.
