Mangaluru: Over 100 gather for foundation stone laying ceremony of bridge violating govt orders

Mangaluru, Mar 21: Despite strict warnings against holding programmes and mass gatherings, in the backdrop of coronavirus outbreak, over 100 people gathered for the ground-breaking ceremony for the work on bridge-cum-saltwater exclusion dam across River Netravathi near Harekala village on Saturday, March 21.

MLA U T Khader, and former minister B Ramanath Rai were present for the foundation stone laying ceremony. This dam built under the aegis of Department of Minor Irrigation and Ground Water Development, is one of the biggest projects happening in Mangaluru.

The construction of bridge cum barrage across Netravati River will connect Harekala Kadav to Adyar. The project costs Rs 200 crore on turnkey basis,

The bridge will have a length of 520 metre with 1.25 metre of pathway on the both sides and 7.5 metre carriage way. The bridge consists of 52 gates and metal sheets will be installed in-between the gates.

The dam will solve the drinking water woes of the people of the region. Ironically, pamphlets spreading awareness on precautions to stop spread of coronavirus were also distributed in the programme.

    As on date nothing is more important than controlling corona virus. People should behave responsibly. This act is most irresponsible act as on today. Let us condemn those encouraging gatherings whether it is hundreds or thousands.

    It seems okay. The project means a lot for the local people. The audience seems fairly dispersed and many wear protective face masks. Let us not crib and overdo our vigilance/ righteousness and pray for its timely, corruptionless, completion.

    As per Modi's advice about Janata Curfew for everyone to stay at home and don't spend money from govt coffers. Even his ministers are not raising any controversial topic for people to engage in public discussions. Fear of Corona is enough for the time being.

    Is that reason to go to a gathering thinking no case has been reported??
    Are you serious??
    If one person is infected and reaches a gathering of 100s in which even only 10 people get infected from that the cycle will still continue..
    You need to change your thinking. A organism/virus won't stop thinking "ohh its a small gathering so I won't infect here.." that's utter stupidity.

    How difficult is it to understand when it is said "NO, don't organise functions". And if the public representatives and public servants do this, what do you expect the rest of the public to do.
