Delhi Assembly polls - Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP bags 62 seats, BJP 8

Updated

New Delhi, Feb 11 (IANS): The Aam Aadmi Party swept the Delhi Assembly polls with 62 seats, five less than in 2015, as per the final results announced by the Election Commission on Tuesday night.

The opposition BJP got eight seats, up from three in 2015, while the Congress remained at zero.

The victory of the AAP ensured a hat-trick for its national convener Arvind Kejriwal in the office of Delhi Chief Minister. All the Kejriwal government ministers retained their seats with a decent margin, though Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia saw a see-saw battle before he was declared winner from his Patparganj seat in east Delhi.

Kejriwal is the second person after Congress leader Sheila Dikshit to become the Chief Minister of the city for the third time.

The AAP had won 67 of the 70 Assembly seats in 2015, barring Rohini, Vishwas Nagar and Mustafabad which had gone to the BJP's kitty.

This time, the BJP lost Mustafabad but retained Rohini and Vishwas Nagar, and also went on to win Gandhi Nagar, Ghonda, Karawal Nagar, Laxmi Nagar and Rohtas Nagar and Badarpur.

The Congress continues to be on zero, and also saw its vote share go down from that in 2015.

The vote share of AAP also declined from 54.34 per cent in 2015 to 53.6 per cent, while the BJP's vote share has increased from 32.19 per cent in 2015 to 38.5 per cent.

The vote share of the Congress dropped to 4.26 per cent this time from 2015's 9.65 per cent. Also, the voter turnout of the city was about five per cent less from that in 2015.

In the 2013 Assembly polls, while the Congress had secured a vote share of 24.55 per cent, the BJP had secured 33.07 per cent vote share and the AAP, which was contesting for the first time, had secured 29.49 per cent.

The AAP and the Congress joined hands to form Arvind Kejriwal's 49-day government.

The Aam Aadmi Party had changed the political picture of Delhi since its formation in 2012. While the assembly polls before 2012 were between the Congress and the BJP, the assembly elections since 2013 had been all about AAP in Delhi.

The BJP got its highest vote share in the first-ever Delhi Assembly polls in 1993 -- 42.82 per cent votes -- and had formed a government. The vote share of Congress was 34.48 per cent during that time.

Later, between 1998 and 2008, the Congress was elected having more than 40 per cent vote share. While the BJP's vote share in 1998, 2003 and 2008 was 34.02 per cent, 35.22 per cent and 36.33 per cent, that of Congress was 47.76 per cent, 48.13 per cent and 40.30 per cent respectively.

New Delhi, Feb 11: Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will eye a third consecutive term in power in Delhi as the Election Commission starts counting of votes at 8am after a three-cornered poll contest that saw it battle the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), whose high-pitched campaign was anchored by home minister Amit Shah and not Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the Congress.

The Delhi Assembly elections result will also determine the AAP’s future and whether Arvind Kejriwal will be able to renew his ambition of making it a national party. All the exit polls have been unanimous that Arvind Kejriwal will return as Delhi chief minister for the third time and the AAP will romp home to victory, at the very least by a two-thirds majority.

The predictions differed only in terms of the margin of victory. The AAP’s tally will fall somewhere between 44 and 68 in the assembly of 70, according to the exit polls.

Seriously Guys!!! you are dancing in happiness!
I feel sad for you guys who are deriving more pleasure from BJPs loss than weeping on the Cong own complete DECIMATION. At least the BJP gave a tough fight and won a few seats, Their vote share increased and Cong vote share plumbed.
Congress needs to rethink its strategies, BJP being one national party is not good for democracy.

    BJP lost by less than:
    100 votes: 8 seats
    1000 votes; 19 seats
    2000 votes ; 9 seats
    Add this seat won 8
    It comes to 44 seat

Think what people do when they don't vote or what u get when voting percentage is low.
3% more voting could have changed the entire game.

BJP increased vote share from last assembly elections by 10%. to 38%
AAP increased vote share from last assembly elections to 53 %

Congress reduced vote share to mere 4%....63 out of 70 of its candidates Lost deposit.

But Congress leaders seems to be happy that BJP has been defeated.

Country is in need of an alternative party at the National level to challenge BJP.
AAP under the guidance and leadership of Kejriwal will surely emerge as the powerhouse.
At the Delhi is at epicenter of the country with mixed population by cast, religion and qualitative people around. People from other states must be watching all the developments and may in the future
They will support AAP to save the country from divisive and communal politics of BJP.
Furthermore, Modiji was not a born Hero or a leader, people made him like that then why can't Kejriwal a well educated person of wisdom and a down to earth personality

Every bhakth should visit Gujarat because it is the duty of Bhakth to fulfill the hope of Modi who spent millions on Patel's statue.

Bhakths, please visit Gujarat as a tourist and enjoy a day or two under the statue.

other states CM and other parties should follow his footsteps ...

to give water, electricity, schools fees, free transports etc...

basics to every residence of particular state... Whether maximum 200 units...above that let them charge...very difficult to survive in Mangalore these days... So much expensive....lucky Delhities.......wish he is our CM.

There are many messages to be learn and acknowledged from the Victory of AAP from Delhi. Here are the few!

    1. Good, qualified and hardworking persons have lot of scope in Indian politics.
    2. Voter/ People, are not so ignorant as presumed. If A.K. group has won for third time; surely its because people are aware, who are genuinely working for them and who are fake!
    3. People have rejected caste/religious politics, since they found a better option. It proves that majority Indians gene is secular.
    4. People have appreciated their Govt's work on cost economy and improvement in education, health care, basic needs such as water supply and electricity.
    5. People do understand who are non corrupt and reliable. Indian voters are thankfully matured enough :)

Good news that APP won in Delhi as anticipated by us all. Mind you , Its a late wake up call for Congress . Its not working anymore. Now its obvious , the old lot is non- reliable. Zero seats in Delhi are you serious?
The Congress high command should now move over and hand over the mantle to some other able Non -Gandhi/Vadra youngster. This process has to be repeated in every constituency around the country. The seniors should ideally retire and voluntarily make way for newcomers and introduce them to the public. This process has to be done NOW and not later .We have 4 years .That is enough time to groom new dynamic youngsters into the party. Fresh faces , new ideas, innovative oratory skills, excellent body language, hunger to work and perform will prompt public to give a chance. I personally feel this is the only way out.

It seems only Delhi has a real educated population (not referring college education) who know that both BJP and Congress are worst parties and only a third front can give some respite.

Mainly lowering of electricity bills and educations reforms set the ball rolling in for Kejriwal.

Expected victory of AAP. BJP has made some inroads improved tally . The Congi and its Ghulams are very happy because BJP didnt get power. What a grand old party thinking is.....They need to revamp the entire party including Gandhi family . Lack of leadership and old men in the party, hurting its prospects badly. High time Congress gets rid of old guard, like bjp did. Push all old guard to mark darshak mandal and fight with youth leaders of substance like sachin pilot, jyotiraditya etc.its the only way out . Moreover it is laughable to see Rahul Gandhi who could not save his own parliamentary seat advising MP's to not get swayed by emotion and strategise. Had RaGa used common sense let alone strategy himself would not have lost shameful loss to dramebaaz Smriti Irani . If Congress contention that its under performing, to defeat BJP. Regarding EVM manipulation...
MoSha won't dare to manipulate EVM, where they are "sure of losing seat"(it is too risky, because, it can backfire) OR they are "sure of winning seat"(why to take unnecessary headache, when you know there is definite win?).
Manipulation can be done, where BJP has confirmed vote bank of at least 30-40% vote share & can be won by manipulating EVM! In this case, nobody will raise question. If question raised also, EC can turn it down!!

In Delhi, before election announcement itself, AAP was leading... so no question of taking risk!!!

I don't understand why would anyone oppose a politician like Kejriwal(Mind you, if you want to make it communal,I would mention that he is a Hindu doing an amazing job and this is coming from a Christian. You, I and our families would want a person who would truly work for us.For the kind of salaries we get in India, we need to have cheaper tax, cheaper electricity, cheaper school fees etc.I was getting 15k when I got a job in Mangalore 3 yrs ago and 15k wasn't enough to take care of my old ailing parents nor was I able to make ends meet.I am sure many can relate. How on earth will we survive with such less salaries and our politicians are only instilling religious intolerance among us. They are talking about CAA, ANTI CAA and things that aren't even relevant at this point when our economy is at its lowest and we all are struggling to make ends meet.Prices have increased for most commodities, murderers and rapists are roaming freely and we aren't even able to take a single decision to punish the culprits. We only pay taxes.Currently,I am working abroad because I wasn't able to gather enough money to treat my parents. With this 15k, will you or I be able to treat our parents or provide good education to our children the way most of these politicians do. Are we actually so dumb that we just don't want to know the truth and are ok with politicians who create communal tension?? We don't run to other countries to have a lavish life.Only after going abroad, you will know that "high standard healthcare " can be completely "free" with a job(I ain't talking about generalward kind of treatment which I opted for every time I was hospitalized in Mangalore). Also, when you are abroad, you have a decent salary package and such good roads and you wouldn't mind paying taxes but in India the toll gates have increased and just because we have one stretch of good road,we rejoice not understanding that these people are just fooling and looting us.Gosh, why are we like this? :/
