Mangaluru: FASTag sticker scam - Government loses lacs of rupees

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jan 26: It has come to light that a big scam has taken place in the FASTag stickers that have been distributed through private banks and E-service centres. Heavy vehicles like truck are making the best of this as they are paying less amount than stipulated in the tollgates.

While the government is incurring huge revenue loss due to this scam, the truck owners are making profit as they are paying far less than what they are supposed to pay to the toll gate.

This issue is seen only in FASTag stickers that are issued by private entities. In Suratkal toll gate alone, in one week, it is recorded that more than 100 heavy vehicles have passed at a very low toll fee. Now the toll gates at Suratkal, Hejamady, Sastan, Brahmarakootlu and Talapady have joined their hands together and have blocked the FASTag of these heavy vehicles, who have flouted the rule. The tollgate personnel are asking the drivers of these vehicles to go to the bank and give proper information.

Due to this discrepancy, the companies who have taken toll collection contract have lost lac of rupees in one or two months period. After the contractors of toll gate brought this scam to the notice of NHAI, decision is taken to block these FASTag.

The very idea of asking deposit and minimum balance (250+150) respectively for issuing FasTag is in itself remains unexplained!!! FasTag is purely a pre-paid card and deposit + minimum balance maintenance for a pre-paid card is really authoritarian!!!

In Singapore, cars carry a huge road tax and other taxes. After that we still have a lot of toll roads, which if am correct is the same in other countries also. The Government has tried to improvise on the current “cash” system and is trying to move into digital payments for better accountability. It’s sad that we’re always trying to break it in India and then find ways to complain about it. I don’t think anyone will have the guts to do it out of India in any country of their current residence. My last trip to Bangalore, I saw longer queues in the Fastag lanes because none had money in the wallet 😄 How is the Government to be blamed for this?

Abolish collecting Toll on National and State highways. This is double taxation and loot. Vehicle owner has already paid 15 years life time road tax in advance while purchasing the vehicle. Also, why there is toll collection when the distance between Hejmady and Surathkal is bearly 12 kms. As per the rule the distance between the toll gates should be 60kms. Also the toll charges are not same in these toll gates..?
The road from Surathkal toll gate towards Mangaluru also not good, having lot of potholes...?

Lifetime road tax is collected. But like car dealers , who offer unlimited kilometer warranty for few years, then we have to pay. Tax is the same, but this is toll tax. Toll is collected by the companies who make new highways or redo old roads. But it is sad that sometimes the roads are horrible and we still have to pay. Paying also is not an issue. Problem is wastage of time at each toll. Eg. While traveling to Bangalore from belgaum there are 10-12 toll plazas. Even if it takes 5 mins 1 hour is lost. This is besides 100 kmph etc to zero and then starting again and repeapting again and again. So overall we are spending /wasting atleast 1 and half to 2 hours. Which is a big thing. So fastag is/was supposed to save some of this time. But since its compulsory for all vehicles, soon we will be back to square one. Sometimes their scanner does not work. Back to paying manually. Back to wasted time. There should be a simple way to pay this amount, without having toll plazas. Maybe prepay to travel from point A to B. After that if you need to go to point C, D... you pay at point B. Or something like that. There could be high quality cameras which track each and every vehicle, incase of fraud. Hope someone can even come with an idea to keep people, dogs, cattle, horses etc from crossing highways. Lot of lives, money and time is wasted in this too. Happy safe and pleasant day and driving

Present Govt's all plans, schemes are qucikfix solutions. They implemented fastag to collect more tax from vehicle owners to level the budget deficit for road construction which is completely on a halt because of no funds. Govt do blunders and citizens has to bear one way or the other in the form new taxes or additons to or ongoing levies without getting any benefit.

In India having just good intentions and progressive mindset is not good enough.

Crookedness is in the blood and people will try to beat the system so that they get ahead even at the inconvenience for others in their society.

It was seen in the implementation of demonetization, GST or even fastag.

The political parties also look at what's good for them rather than the country they're supposed to serve, and start unnecessary demonstration and bundhs.

What we need is a transformation at the individual level to do things that are good for the world were living in .

    Fastag itself a cheating business.
I got a fastag for my car from Axis bank paying Rs.400
I have been told that Rs.200 is the charge and Rs.200 is the currency.
I passed thru one tailgate Rs.35 deducted another tailgate Rs.50 got deducted.
    Balance was Rs.115.00
On the way back, it supposed to be deducted Rs.30 and Rs.20 in both toogates.
But, it didn't work. Staff told me that my car is blacklisted. Astonishing I asked why, he says there should a balance of minimum Rs.215.00
Otherwise pay a full cash charge.
    Isn't it a bigger SCAM ?????

no sir, you have not been cheated.

first 200 is refundable security deposit.

second 200 was in your wallet. but when it falls below 160, which is threshold limit, you had to top up. I am sure you got alert, to top up. blacklist happened because you failed to top up

second point, all journey considered equal. no rebate for return journey at the moment. maybe they change in future

i don't understand why people disagree with your comment. What is mentioned is correct, Rs 200 is for security deposit & balance Rs 200 is in wallet. I too have a FATag issued by Axis. Axis Bank charged me Rs 200 only for security deposit & I uploaded money separately for wallet

    Govinda,
    Thank you for explanation.
Why should they hold 160 Rs as threshold + a deposit Rs 200 making a total of Rs.360 per vehicle????
Can you imagine 1 crore vehicles multiply by 360 Rs
Is whopping Rs. 360 Crores of public money.

I am just wondering is there anything left in this country that does not involve any scam or fraud.

Earlier only government organizations and machinery was corrupt. Now even, private individuals are trying to con.

This is due to the desperate situation of worst economy in the last 70 years, handled by the illiterate chai seller and pickle aunty.
