It is normal for a NRI foreign traveller to carry currency of different countries if he travels a lot. The amount does not indicate any involvement in crime it just slightly exceeds the limit. Our customs officials need to use common sense in these cases . Do not ruin his life for carrying a few extra dollars by oversight.

There is no restriction on carrying forein currency while travelling abroad as long as the cash does not exceed equivalent of 5000 US dollars. One has to declare if carrying cash in excess of 5000 US dollars. In this case, obviously the person was carrying more than 5000 US dollars, but not such a huge amount as to make a big news!
