Mangaluru: Seminar on drug abuse prevention at St Agnes College on Jan 18

Mangaluru, Jan 9: A seminar on 'Drug Abuse Prevention & Addiction Counseling Skills' for teachers of the city colleges will be held at St Agnes College, here on January 18 in the context of the growing drug menace in the city.

The seminar is hosted by the PG Department of Clinical Psychology, St Agnes Centre for Post graduate Studies in collaboration with Ecolink Institute of Tourism and Education (ELITE) and TELOCA addiction Recovery Center.

Around 100 teachers from various educational institutions, including UG, PG and professional colleges will take part in the seminar from 2 pm to 5 pm on Saturday January 18. The seminar will cover topics like basic understanding of drugs and addiction, signs and symptoms of addiction and counseling skills. Members of the Narcotic Anonymous group in the city will give their testimonies and explain about the functioning of their fellowship during the seminar.

The students and faculty of the department of Clinical Psychology will coordinate the sessions and discussions about the 'Role of teachers as Counselors' and initiate a series of activities like seminars, awareness programmes etc in collaboration with the Ecolink Institute. The seminar also coincides with the centenary celebrations of St Agnes Institutions.

Dr Thomas Scaria, an internationally certified addiction counselor and trainer will be the chief resource person who possesses more than 30 years of experience in Addiction Counseling, treatment and training. He served Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Programme (CPDAP), Colombo as the senior programme officer and coordinated capacity building programmes on Addiction Prevention and Management in over 20 countries.

The Ecolink Institute of Tourism and Education in collaboration with the department of Psychology of St Agnes College and the Teloca will be also introducing a three- month Diploma course on 'Addiction Counseling and Therapy' in the near future.
