Udupi: Auto drivers stage protest against two-wheeler rental services

Daijiworld Media Network (HB)

Udupi, Nov 18: The Udupi zone auto-rickshaw drivers and owners staged protest in front of DC office, Manipal, here on Monday, November 18, against two-wheeler rental services in Udupi.

Pradeep Poojary, president, Manipal Auto Union and other members submitted a memorandum copy to Udupi DC G Jagadeesha.

“Permission has not been given for Bounce Company to run an agency here. If they have got permission at state level, then no one can stop them. Till this issue gets cleared, Bounce Company should not give vehicles for rent,” the DC announced.

K Raghupati Bhat, MLA Udupi, said, “So far 9 unauthorised Bounce two-wheelers have been seized in Udupi. I will discuss the matter with the concerned department.”

The main reason for the protest is that the two-wheeler rental services are dominating the market and taking away business from rickshaw owners in Udupi. The two-wheeler rental services have become a fast growing business and people prefer rented bikes as it is cost effective. Many rental agencies have opened in Udupi and have not obtained the required permissions, the protesters informed.

Anand C Kallolilikar, CMC Commissioner, Councillors like Mahesh Takur, Harish Poojary, Prashanth Kundar, Shashikanth Kundar, Sukesh Kundar and others were present.

The strike received a mixed response from auto drivers.

I fully support bounce, it's a good initiative for the affordable comfort for general people. Auto wala gundas are taking a lot of money from poor people and driving rash on road, their license should be seized immediately.

I fully support the Two wheeler rental service in Udupi and whole of India.

I would also support self driven Two wheeler rental service in India, where locals and tourists, business persons from other places can also use whenever they go to different cities, especially different states.

Three wheelers fight against two wheelers. Happens only in India.
The art of business is that there is always inevitable competition. And you ought to be aware of Ur earnings and who else is there in the same field. U can't cut others legs.
Auto drivers have created for themselves a great tag on 1. Not using indicators
    2. Changing lanes as and when they feel on NH and bypass
    3. No break lights
    4. Stopping momentarily wherever they want besides seeing the vehicle behind.

Now they protest cz a part of their cake is taken by two wheeler service.
I wish the priest goes in vain.. unity is not the solution for every mistakes. Its for better good.

Two wheelers are God for younger people .. they can go multiple places in one ride and do their instead of every time waiting and arguing with autos....
Auto drivers should stop this agitation and adjust with day to day development..
Instead of doing agitation against two wheels.. they should do agitation against petrol and gas price increase .... road development.... potholes... etc..

What right auto drivers have to stop people using renting vehicle facility?

We might have two wheeler with driver for hire in days to come like in Goa. Who can stop this?

Tomorrow they might stop us from buying vehicle as it will effect them.

They need full liberty to force people to use only autos.

Just look at the massive progress, we achieved during the past decade in every field of life !!! Customers are always king's.. the more they are satisfied, the better will be your profits margin and prosperity !!!!!!!!!

Auto driver's need to be taught basic etiquette & respect for humanity in life. They really don't have any manner's with the passengers nor the general public. They behave like they own this country.

Every country has the right to innovate new idea's to reduce pollution and Global Warming. Everyone cann't afford to buy a car, so easy mode of transportation should be identified.

We need to look at the possibility of putting bicycles on rental through an APP. Many SEA countries have implemented this scheme. It may not be a good option for the aged and senior citizen's.

    Jai Hind.

Why these auto wallas protesting? there is nothing illegal in doing a rental two-wheeler business.

These auto drivers (not all) act like goondas many a time. Last time when I took an auto ride, he was riding recklessly and then took waiting charge for just stopping for 30 seconds. These people dont have basic manners, more like rowdies (again I repeat not all). They dont follow basic traffic rules. They think the roads are their property.

"The main reason for the protest is that the two-wheeler rental services are dominating the market and taking away business from rickshaw owners in Udupi."
Good that Daijiworld has also highlighted the real reason of the protest. Sooner or later Bounce will get all statutory clearances. They are a large enterprise with pan India presence. Such small hurdles will do little to stop the inevitable.

I am very sad to tell that the auto drivers do not follow traffic rules, do not use meters and overcharge. Day by day the autos in Manipal are becoming more like the ones in Bangalore where they try to squeeze every drop of money from their clients. It is only natural that residents of Udupi and Manipal will start looking for other alternatives.

People prefer these two wheeler services because auto drivers are extremely rude and even after charging rent so expensive, they don't bother to give us the balance money saying they don't have change..

What Dadagiri is this? Its a free market. If customers dont like the services of auto rickshaw they have every right to go for rental services. How dare you stop this in the name of regulation. Wont be surprised that BJP leaders are bribed by rickshaw association to stop issuing permits to bike rentals.

Be it Mumbai , Bangalore or Delhi e-bikes , app bikes and app based self driven cars is a major hit.....these type of forcrful activities and protests will do no good. Automation and digitisation will take away old ways of doing business , if you dont change then it will be the NOKIA situation when the big Change will eat up your business.

In Manipal auto charges very high compare to any states. In addition No meeter fixed and and they charge Rs 40-60 for 4-5 Km distance and poor students are paying without any choice.
Mr. R Bhat please ask them to fix meeter and then we will see. According to me two wheeler rental services are better option and economical.

In western countries people are using rental & own bicycle and this is much better to stay healthy and fit and I am planning to implemnet the system in Udupi & Manipal students . Hope No one will object & seize bicycles including politicians .
