Puttur: Seeking urgent asphalting of highway - Action committee to block NH 75

Daijiworld Media Network - Puttur (SP)

Puttur, Oct 9: Noting that the stretch of national highway 75 between Addahole in Shiradi village and B C Road is in despicable condition and demanding immediate asphalting of this stretch, the highway blockade and protest will be staged on Thursday morning at Nelyady, said president of Nelyady National Highway Action Committee Fr Varghese.

Addressing a press meet here on Tuesday October 8, he noted that the common people are suffering because of the wretched condition of this road. He regretted the fact that no one is responding to the problems of the people or undertaking any initiative to address the problem. "As this issue is neglected, we are holding the protest. Since the last three years, this road was dug and unscientific works were undertaken at a few stretches. Now, since the last six months, the work has been left halfway through by the contractors, leaving the people using the road high and dry," he complained.

He said that the Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner and people's representatives were asked to provide all information about the status of this road, but no response has been received. He said that the protest will be held till all concerned arrive at the spot and provide clarification. He also stated that about 5,000 people from various organizations and institutions from the region will take part in the protest. They will come together at Gandhi Maidan, Nelyady and then move in a rally via Nelyady town and hold road blockade for one hour, he informed. "We will not go back till we get satisfactory response and assurance," he asserted.

Secretary of the committee Jose K G, member Fr Adarsh Joseph, Nelyady Merchants Association general secretary Subrahmanya G and others were present.

Why are you all protesting?? The road only existed "once upon a time".
There is no road between Gundya and BC Road. Please accept this fact and carry-on with your life.
Anyways you all can give a try and see what the so called elected representatives tell. Maybe they could confirm if the road existed.

the roads are a shame, any village dirt track is better. And the FM wonders why automobiles sales are slowing - who wants a vehicle when driving on such roads becomes injurious to health?

It is true that our PWD contractors put asphalting only half inch or less than 1 inch deep it will not resist single monsoon rain.
Actually it has to be minimum 3 layer of one & half inch each - then only it will survive for at least 10 years.

**** irony is that when checked with one of the contractor : " maximum money of contract they need to kickback to Engineer for approval as well as higher authority for sanctioning the tender" then finally remain only Jalli on road no asphalt.

**** if our government follow M.E. and GCC roads better! * (no need to give raining reason - now in GCC and M.E also heavy rains sometimes, nothing will happen to the roads)

I am surprised to look at the poor, pathetic, miserable condition of our roads!
This road would have been made newly just last year or a year before that.
This is clear proof that our present day engineers are extremely incompetent.
They don't follow civil engg. procedures and also don't use proper materials.

But our own engineers are doing good roads abroad, otherwise they will lose job! May be they are getting proper material and here substandard and all resources and finance leaks by the time it reaches road site. Good part of our roads end up in some selected pockets. With the amount spent on roads for 10 years we can get world class roads that may last a century with hardly any maintenance. Everyone knows it, its a open secret! Funny thing is we pay toll through the nose for non existing roads! Who is accountable?? We are blind with party affiliations and we suffer from not having basic amenities! We have time for protests on non existing conversions...we do not have time to protest bad roads...may be a source of income for some???
