Kundapur, Jul 13: Rekha Naika, mother of the one year and three month old child Sanvika, who lost her life due to drowning in Kubja rivulet, has confirmed that the child slipped of her hand when she went to commit suicide along with the children.

In her confession to the police and psychologist, Rekha said that she got down into the Kubja rivulet with her son Satvik (5) and Sanvika, with the intention of committing suicide. As soon as she got into the rivulet, Sanvika, whom Rekha was holding on her right hand, slipped off from her hand and got washed away. When Rekha made an attempt to catch Sanvika, she lost control of the other child Satvik also and he too got washed away in the rivulet and Rekha herself also was taken away by the force of water. However, Rekha and Satvik survived as they were taken to the shore of the rivulet by the strong current of water. However, Sanvika died of drowning.

Rekha, out of utter panic and depression, gave a false statement to the neighbours and family members that some strangers have kidnapped Sanvika. The psychologist, who interacted with Rekha has told that she is under depression and needs suitable treatment to come out of the shock. Rekha is admitted as an inpatient in the Dr A V Baliga Memorial Hospital in Udupi and is under treatment now.

Further investigation of the case will be done after Rekha recovers completely from the psychological disorder. DySP of Kundapur is deputed as the investigating officer of this case as an impartial and honest inquiry is needed in the same.

Earlier report

Daijiworld Media Network - Kundapur (MS)

Kundapur, Jul 13: The case of child abduction reported from Kumtiberu in Yedamoge village of the taluk has taken a new turn. Police had suspected the statement of Rekha Naik, mother of the deceased child Sanvika from the time they visited her house. It is learnt that Rekha was subjected to intense interrogation on the night of Thursday itself at Shankaranarayana police station and police have got vital clues and twist to the initial story of abduction.

Rekha Naik's inquiry continued on Friday, July 12 also and according to police sources, she has given the statement that she tried to commit suicide along with both her children. However, accurate information from the police is awaited.

Rekha was subjected to psychological counselling on Friday. It is said that it is unearthed that Rekha is suffering from mental pressure.

The body of one year and three months old Sanvika, daughter of Santhosh Naik and Rekha Naik, who went missing from the early morning of Thursday, was found at a distance of around two km from their house at Kallugundi of Kubja river, which is flowing nearby the house.

As there was no similarity between the initial statement that was given by Rekha Naik about the abduction of the child by masked men and the subsequent finding of the body of the child in the river, the needle of suspicion fell on her. It is suspected that Rekha might have tried to kill herself and children due to some family issue.

Giving the updates on the case, addition SP Kumarachandra said, "Further investigation will be carried out after we receive the post mortem report. We cannot interrogate the family members, including the mother, at this stage. We have recorded the statement of the mother of the deceased child. So far we have recorded that the child died because of drowning. But final decision is not yet arrived at. More inquiry will be conducted only after Saturday."

No mother wants to kill her own children. If this mother had decided to kill herself and her children, the situation she was going through has forced her to do so. She must have thought thousand times before she took this drastic step. How could she commit suicide leaving her children on their own? If she could not take care of them when she was alive, would someone look after them? These thoughts must have made her to take her children with her. However, her destiny took a different turn which took the child from her. Now rest of her life she would live with the agony that she was fully responsible for the death of her infant. Living with such guilty conscious would be quite difficult for her. She needs long term counselling and also solution for her problems. In many such cases the reason for a mother committing suicide along with her tiny children is extreme poverty or torture from husband and his family. If someone is responsible for her current situation, the y should be held guilty and strictly dealt with instead of punishing this woman for someone's crime.

It’s really paining when we hear like this type of incident, I’m asking BJP’s bhaktas’ instead of communal disturbing the society why you are not helping these people. These people’s needs only for your vote bank after that value is zero let them alive or die you won’t care.

One more thing - when did this happen ? During the day ? Dawn ? At night ? Didn't anybody see her walking home fully drenched ? Going out with two but returning with one ? Nobody questioned her ? Neither her husband ? Is anybody asking something to the boy if he ever fell in the river and if he knew that his sister is not there since that fall ?

Please.... The police has been taken for a ride even upto bringing sniffer dogs. I still can't buy this.

Dear Mr. Jossey, I am sure you will agree with me that it is very difficult to understand the agony a human being going through in different circumstances. Prolonged depression or momentary depression may push a person to commit suicide. Our duty is to help them during distress and help them at that moment. We should stop them to commit suicide and help them to overcome the depression. "No man is an Island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent; a part of the main" - John Donne

Poverty, marital issues, family disputes, lack of govt timely help or harrassment from relatives many things contributes for such steps for people. Sometimes no ways to come out from difficult situations except temples or churches are ready to help in such situations provided that person in trouble seek help
