Mangaluru: Proposed bus stand project at Pumpwell being shifted to Padil?

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 25: Land at Pumpwell had been acquired about a decade back for setting up of a well-equipped central bus stand of the city there. Now it appears that the city corporation and district administration are now thinking of relocating the bus stand to Padil in the city outskirts.

Currently, the complex of the district deputy commissioner's office is being constructed at Padil. It is felt that it would be beneficial for the people if the bus stand comes up in the vicinity of this complex. Moreover, the city (junction) railway station is located nearby. As such many have been arguing that Padil will suit the bill more than Pumpwell.

There is a 17-acre plot owned by private persons next to the proposed deputy commissioner's complex. It has been decided to hold discussions with the land owner.

Pumpwell has already become a hub of traffic and traffic pressure is high there. The pressure will increase if a bus stand is built there. Therefore, many have expressed the opinion that shifting of the bus stand away from Pumpwell is the best solution. It is said that experts have also predicted problems at Pumpwell during rainy season. There are also differences between the corporation and the department of national highways on the proposal to build road from the bus stand to the highway. Therefore, this project does not appear to be going anywhere.

There was plan to construct integrated transportation hub at Mallal private, inter-city bus stands, shopping centre, offices etc. In 2009, 7.23 acres of private land had been acquired for the purpose. The officials also plan to set up substation at Pumpwell. One more substation will also come up at Kurur. These things are still in the state of proposals in the smart city meetings, and final decision is yet to be taken.

City corporation commissioner, Narayanappa, said that the proposal for bus stand at Pumpwell has not been shelved but a decision to set up well-equipped bus stand near the deputy commissioner's complex at Padil has been taken. He said that once this land area is fixed, further steps would be taken.

A newly built bus stand at an inconvenient place at BC road is totally deserted and used by stray dogs as a shelter! After sometime, it will become a home to the homeless and beggars!!

SHIFTING TO PADIL IS A GREAT VISION, NEARBY ALL EMPTY LANDS .. JELLIGUDDE, SHANTI NAGAR ALL HAVE SCOPE FOR DEVELOPMENTS AND LOTS OF LAND - PLAIN LANDS AVAILABLE, THEREBY DEVELOPMENT OF MANGALORE IS VERY MUCH POSSIBLE. ALSO, LAND VALUE IS LESS IN THESE AREAS.

Will Shifting the bus stand to Padil, really decongest the city arterial roads, during peak office hours ??? Mangaluru town planners should be visionaries, for the future generations.... Why not a Metro line to Suratkal n Bantwal ??? The city should attract entrepreneurs to set up industries in the surrounding districts....... doing so, will certainly prevent mass migration, of educated youths to other states n nations !!!!!!

The metro is overdue. It should run from Kasarkod to Kundapur. This will definitely ease traffic on the highways. The frequency should be increased during peak hours & reduced during off-peak hours. Buses should run round trips from/to the station. Instead of simply burning diesel, generate electric power from renewable sources. This will in-turn lead to less traffic jams, reduced pollution, less accidents & also less bus drivers who behave as cowboys.

If the bus stand is shifted to Padil, what about passengers arriving from Bantwal, Puttur and Belthangady who need to go to commercial areas like Hampankatta and Bunder? I hope buses coming from Udupi and Kundapur will pass via Hampankatta or Balmatta. In such case all city and local service buses must be permitted to ply up to State Bank.

This is one of the best example of what a politician can do save their property. If govt acquires the property, he has to settle for the govt agreed rates. This is the core reason. It's not the traffic or the rain water.

Its better main bus stand goes behind padil - towards parangipet area which is totally empty land and the high way is too broad too and safe. As it is there are so many buses and all busses can take their routes till that main bus stand and avoid traffic jam in city. The same can be planned well too and smart city development can be done with proper broad roads in that area, like a greater Mangalore city.

This will be excellent idea if happened to open up city congestion. DC office and bus stand in padil will open up a new city area away from city and it's a entry point for those coming from Bangalore.

Before it's too late the authorities should take a public opinion and then move forward. The authorities SHOULD NOT have their say. This is deliberately being altered on
grounds of selfish motive and to satisfy the social-vested interest of some concerned person (s) to obtain kick-back/greasing of palms.
