Udupi, Jun 12: MLA from here, Raghupathi Bhat on Tuesday June 11, visited the areas where highway construction is in progress between the city and Manipal.

Raghupathi Bhat undertook this visit on account of various complaints he has received from local people about the problems created by haphazard road work. During the recent rains, the road construction was badly hit. The local people have been encountering several problems. The MLA, who visited these spots at the request of the people, scrutinized the problems. During the rainy season, the drainages in Manipal, Laxmindranagar areas are badly hit. The connecting roads in these areas have also been washed away.

Raghupathi Bhat gave instructions to the concerned to address the issues raised by the people. Locals complained to the MLA about the unscientific U-Turns in Laxmindranagar area. Raghupathi Bhat asked the contractors to create connecting roads on temporary basis. The MLA gave a week's deadline to the officials to resolve all the problems faced by the locals.

On Sunday night, two bike riders were injured due to the sludge collected on the road near Inox theatre. The sludge had been washed down the road with rain water from Syndicate Circle where the road extension work is in progress.

Raghupathi Bhat also ordered the authorities to make full use of available government land. He gave instructions to build bus bays, drainage and footpaths systematically in the available space.

The MLA also warned the authorities to see that the problems are resolved within a week and also assured the locals that he would visit again during the next week to inspect the progress.

Municipal councillors, Balakrishna Shetty, Bharathi Prakash, Ashok Ravindra Kamath, Dr Suresh Shenoy, Rathnakar Shetty and others accompanied Bhat during the inspection.

Anyone who saw the construction work going on during summer was expecting this or more than this, if it rains.

Till now we have not seen heavy rains and if it rains heavily definitely we will see artificial floods around the area.

They should have woken up much earlier and finished waterways. I am sure contractor is aware of the consequence.
