Mangaluru: 'Build smart roads, never dig them up after construction' - DC

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 10: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner (DC), Sasikanth Senthil, asked the officials to improve basic infrastructure in the city under seven different packages of the Smart City Project. He also told them to build smart roads as per plans and implement works by applying their minds in a different, unique way.

Senthil was addressing the participants of Smart City meeting held at the office of the deputy commissioner here on Thursday May 9.

"Always adopt modern way of thinking. You should avoid digging of the road and thereby create hiccups for the road construction after the roads are built. Contribute to the development of the city by concentrating on integrated development," he told officials of different departments who were present at the meeting.

Senthil was particular about not allowing the digging of roads after they are laid. He asked Mescom, Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation, Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd, water supply department PWD etc to identify works if any pending in their departments in areas where roads are planned to be constructed, coordinate with the officials of Smart City officials and help to complete the work without any problems.

Senthil observed that many a time, different institutions undertake the same work again and again, and dig the roads repeatedly after the work is attended to. He said the departments should work in tandem with each other and not to allow digging of roads after the work of repair is attended to. He said that the roads under the project should be people-friendly, and not vehicle-friendly. "Parking should not be allowed in footpaths. Pedestrian safety should be given paramount importance," he explained.

He asked BSNL, Mescom engineers etc to provide information about the cables they plan to install before the road construction is taken up. He said that roads that are planned to be completed before the end of this month should be completed as per time schedule and sought report on development works before the next meeting is held.

The deputy commissioner collected information of works undertaken by Mangaluru City Corporation. He advised the concerned to complete works either through TDR system. He also asked municipal officials to attend to the balance works on Mangaladevi Road and Bhavanthi Road and settle the same through discussions or TDRs. He asked the officials of the municipal corporation to consult the regional transport officer to sort out the issue of buses being parked near Kankanady market.

Building roads and digging is done purposefully...!!!! If the road designer is made responsible and jailed for the mistake, then such things may be controlled.

What do you mean 'Smart Roads". First design the roads properly with ample parking and paving. Then provide proper drawings and specifications to the contractors. Ensure the contractors don't deviate from the specifications by cutting corners by having proper supervision. Lastly if you allow digging after construction of road then make sure they are made good as per the original specifications. Fine all contractors who don't adhere to this. Everything is under your control Mr. DC . Please enforce it to make Mangalore a "Smart City"

This week road gets concretised, after curing digging takes place from one by one public department for drainage, Fibre optic cable laying, Power cable laying, this laying that laying takes place only after concretising. This is how the system works or else contractor mafia, comission mafia will not survive.
This is being done purposefully by knowing everything.

No DC nor anybody can make Mangalore city into Smart city. Because first of all citizens of Mangalore must change. Here old mentality. Every one want in and around Hampankatta area only. First of all DC must shift his office to outskirts. Along with RTO office, Wholesale Vegetable market and most important is our Service Bus Stand. Our Drainage system and Pipe Line is still in old technology. And our MCC has layed the concrete road on that old system only. Digging the roads will be never ending process. Our DC must study the history of Mangalore.

It is only making money by the contractors, MCC engineers and officials who corrupt to the core. The corporators are useless and stupid what work do they do. Why do we need the corporators.? The only footpath which remained on St. Mother Teresa road Falnir, as been ruined by some builder that is opposite Athena hospital. What are the police and the corporation doing? There must be huge hafta package given to the authorities by the builder.
The contractors should be given a time constrain to finish a particular road or project.

awhat our DC Senthil conveyed the message/instructions with regard to digging of roads often to install cables, pipelines, etc. is very correct. Always we can see roads are cut, dug up now and then causing inconvenience to the pedestrians and restricting the smooth movement of vehicle. That too such works are being delayed for weeks and months together. The MCC Engineers have to improve a lot and complete the work within the stipulated time. Its always happen in Fr. Mullers Road, Kankanady Junction and other places Such stupid works be stopped in future. Along with the City the concerned personnel should also improve and become start.
