Mangaluru: Suratkal toll plaza - concession extended to local private cars withdrawn

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Feb 15: From March 1 onward, private cars bearing registration number starting with KA 19 will have to pay toll charges at Suratkal toll plaza. They were enjoying exemption from toll charges till now at this tollgate.

It is learnt that on an average, 3,000 locally registered private cars pass through the toll plaza. Because of the exemption, the company managing the tollgate is suffering loss of three lac rupees per day, it is said. To recover this loss, a decision to lift exemption given to local vehicles has been taken, Keshav Aggarwal Toll Company, which was given contract to manage this gate recently, stated.

The company said that the cars bearing KA 19 registration numbers can buy a monthly pass by paying a sum of Rs 255 and make any number of trips through this gate. If they do not hold a pass, they have to pay Rs 50 for one way journey. The national highways department, in its notification, had fixed Rs 50 for cars, jeeps and small vehicles for one way journey and Rs 75 for two-way.

In the past, after the locals steadfastly protested against the collection of toll charges here, the district administration had intervened and asked the management to extend concession to the locals. The company, which claims to have been facing losses, has now decided to withdraw the concession extended earlier to cars bearing local registration number.

For the educated illiterates, who keep blaming Modi even if someone farts, the gazette notification for Surathkal toll booth was issued on 23rd June 2013 (Modi govt. was not formed then).

I will not pay the toll at all. Government is looting money like anything from citizens, governments are the biggest looters of the public.
Why toll management has been given to a Rajasthani company? Locals are not capable?
Why so much amount for One way journey?

Why should we pay toll for a road which cannot be called a road in the true sense of the word. When driving from Mangalore to Surathkal the road is in a terrible condition immediately after exiting the toll booth. Is anyone monitoring these highways before allowing these companies to extract toll from the daily commuters? Or are they busy lining their own pockets only. Where are our MP's/MLA's ? Bah!!!

Our politicians will not raise this questions...may be be because they get their share!! Money spent on road may be collected within 4 years and the toll robbery will continue for 20+ years!! DAY LIGHT ROBBERY of CITIZENS and NOBODY had time to fight back!!!!! We are behind religion, protest against valentines day and meat related issues....what others should eat!!! But we keep selling what others should not eat!! with such hypocrisies...where is the unity to fight injustice!!? we are getting robbed in day light and legally in the name of toll!!

I have never seen a people like us. We are ready to be bakras blindly. The only things we bargain is with the poor fisher woman. We don't care if we have pathetic roads. We don't care if we still have to bribe officials to get our jobs done at government offices. We simply don't care. All we care is to bargain with the poor fisher woman.

These toll gates are first of all run by goons, secondly why should we pay while the roads are still in a pathetic condition. Why should I pay while i have already paid a road tax.

How much will the government fleece us? How long will you make the tax payer suffer??

Atleast dacoits are better than our governments. Dacoits will loot once and for all.

I can pay the toll in hejmady / sastan because the roads are good.. But why do we need to shell money for suratkal - pump well road... Look at the road... Really shameful that the contractor is still collecting toll for this road... Government need to ban this toll or all the govt vehicles also have to pay the toll so that they will also know value of money..

Why should we pay toll even for “good roads”? Isnt it a basic infrastructure that a government is supposed to provide to its citizens?

Isnt this a daylight robbery? In western countries toll is cllected on major expressways - not on city toads.

The NHAI has taken our local Mangalore Udupi road and given it to private parties to develop. They have done a very shoddy job and got away with it. Now this Toll company is running a legal extortion racket in the guise of toll collection. What happens to people who stand around NITK?. Do they have a alternate road? The government is bound to have a alternate non toll road for people who have been deprived of their existing connectivity .
Why cant the people and politicians understand that the highways should be seperated from cities and should bypass populated areas. If places like Gadag, Hubli Dharwad etc. all have bypass roads why our twin districts have the highway cutting through the cities and causing untold misery to the residents.

Due to geographic nature, it is not at all possible to build bypass road(NH66) in coastal city like Mangaluru.

This is a golden opportunity for locals to come together and get this oney extorting evil out of Surathkal. Please do not settle for cocession bones thrown by the toll managing company, instead make sure that this loot is stopped and toll gate removed once and for all.
