Mangaluru, Dec 13: 'Student Life is a Golden Life' is a universal truth. When social and humanitarian service gets added to the value-based education, the life becomes meaningful. Therefore extra-curricular activities are as important as the book studies, which will play a great part in forming the beautiful future life for the students. That too if the students partake in the activities of National Service Scheme (NSS) their personality also gets evolved. It teaches them how to live cordially with others.

In this background, the students of Dr Dayananda Pai and Satish Pai government first grade college of carstreet in the city are a model for the whole state of Karnataka.

The students of governmnet first grade college of carstreet have grown golden paddy crop in the seven acres of fields that were lying barren from many years in many wards of a village that is near Konaje slightly ahead of Mangalore University campus. By this act they have become the inspiration for many college organizations to do some sort of social service.

Around 200 students of the college, who took part in the NSS camp and planted the saplings are thrilled to see the full grown paddy crop in the fields, which is the fruit of their labour. The students of carstreet government first grade college divided the 10 paddy fields spread on a area of seven acres into two parts of three and a half acres each and did organic paddy farming in one part and used fertilizers in the other and got a rich bounty of crop.

The students of the college have visited at least 50 times to this area in the last two years. That too with a happy face and determination to achieve something. They did the harvesting of the crop on Monday, December 10 during the three days of NSS camp. MP Nalin Kumar Kateel also took part in the harvesting of the crop and inspired the students and also lauded their effort.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said, "The work of organic paddy farming which went on for four continuous months, is the first such attempt in the state of Karnataka. The village will develop because of this. This will be helpful for the students to know about the agriculture and rural lifestyle. This also teaches the students to live harmonious social life. It also teaches to be self-reliant."

Dr Naveen N Konaje, project officer of NSS gave the details of the works done by NSS.

*The work of identifying senior citizens of the village as per the Aadhar card, who are above sixty years of age, and providing them with identity card will be done in coordination with the JCI of Mangala Gangotri
*A comprehensive free medical check camp based on traditional medicine will be conducted by Triveni Ayurveda Center
*Tulu Bangara programmed will be conducted in coordination with Tulu Academy
*Festival of lights and dinner programme with the villagers will be held
*In cooperation with the Ullal Agricultural Research Centre, Kitchen Garden training programme will be held for the villagers in teh camp
*Students created awareness among the villagers by visiting 400 houses about the Swachh Bharat Mission under the guidance of Sheena Shetty and Krishna Moolya of Mudipu Janashikshana Trust
*The students of first grade college Carstreet have visited the three wards of the villages at least 50 times from the Varamahalaxmi Vrata Day of last year. The rice which the students got in last year's harvest was taken to the rice mill, polished and used for lunch in the college. The owners of the fields also got part of the harvest. This year, though the yield in the fields where fertilizer was used, is not upto the expected level, the yield in the organically-farmed part of the field is good.
