Udupi, Nov 28: Education is an important thing which is required for each and every person to develop themselves. Taking this into consideration, many people from the surroundings of Brahmavar region, wanted to have the standard quality education to their children.

It was the urge of people of Brahmavar to open an English Medium School with the aim of imparting sound moral values and good education. With the goodwill and the holy vision, education as the primary mission Fr John Baptist Braggs said yes to the cry of the people and provided the place at the church verandah for the nursery classes and became the founder of the school. Nirmala English medium school came into existence on June 1, 1993 with 27 children in Upper Kindergarten (UKG) and 32 in the Lower Kindergarten (LKG). The first teachers were Anita Pereira for LKG and GeethaHolla for UKG. Sr Dorothy Saldanha was appointed as the first Headmistress. The classes were conducted in the church office.

Teaching and non-teaching staff

In the year 1994, the first standard was started. Meantime, the Karnataka state government passed an order, which made it mandatory to impart education in mother tongue at the primary level i.e first to fourth standard. The language policy was a blow for the permission to start an English Medium school. However, 28 students were admitted in the first standard.

On March 13, 1997, the new building was inaugurated. Fr Edwin Pinto, the vicar general of Mangalore Diocese blessed the school building. K Jayaprakash Hegde, honorable minister for Port and Fisheries, government of Karnataka Inaugurated the building. The school building is situated on the second floor of the Holy Family Complex having seven classrooms, a staff room and a office room.

The school got recognition for fifth, sixth and seventh standards on May 31, 1999, with the recognition No 184:1999-2000. In the year 2000, the students of the school reached the seventh standard. In the first batch 32 students appeared for the Seventh standard pubic exam and scored 100% pass result for the school. In the year 2001, high school was recognized by the government of Karnataka and the credit behind this goes to Fr George Monis, the principal.

The present new building was inaugurated during the period of Fr Cornelius Monteiro, the correspondent. The first batch of students of10th standard was in the year 2003-04. From 2004-11, the school has secured 100% results in the SSLC board examination. Till now 15 batches have passed through the SSLC board examination, out of which,10 batches have secured cent percent result. In the academic year 2017-18 also, the school secured 100% result under the leadership of Irine Pereira, the headmistress and selfless service of the staff. The aim, vision and mission of founder Fr J B Braggs has completed 25 shining years in molding the life of the blooming buds of Brahmavar.

Since the starting of this institute Fr John Baptist Braggs OFM Cap (1993 – 94), Fr Valerian D'Silva OFM Cap (1994 – 96), Fr Cornellius Monteiro OFM Cap (1996 – 98), Fr Vitus Prabhudas Pinto OFM Cap(1998 –2001), Fr Peter Mendonca OFM Cap (2001 – 04), Fr Denis Saldanha OFM Cap (2004 – 10), Fr Antony Vas OFM Cap (2010 – 17) and Fr Victor Fernandes OFM Cap (2017 - till date) have served as the correspondents.

Sr Dorothy Saldanha (1993 – 1994), Sr Pauline Fernandes (1994 – 2001), Sr Jackline D'Costa (2001 – 2002), Fr George Monis OFM Cap (2002 – 2007), Fr. Dolphy Serrao OFM Cap (2007 – 2008), Sr Pushpa B (2008 – 2010), Sachita B B (2010 – 2012), Fr Gerald Vegais OFM Cap (principal) (2010 – 2012), Fr Wilson Clifford Andrade OFM Cap (2012 – 2014), Herald Lewis (2014 – 2015), Theresa Fernandes (2015 – 2016), Irene D'Almeida (2016 – 2018) and Fr Joslie Francis D'Silva OFM Cap (2018 - present), have served the institution as the headmasters and headmistresses.

The first donors were Ignatius Mary Lewis and family, Matpady, and A J W Sequeira and family Brahmavar. Nirmala English Medium School was established with a humble and noble intention of providing all round development through quality education to the rural students. It follows the Karnataka state syllabus with English as the medium of instruction. The motto of the school is 'Education is the lamp for my path'.

For the academic year 2018-19, with 50 new admissions and 42 current SSLC batch students, the total strength of the school is 616. The school has 23 teaching and 10 non-teaching staff. During the academic year various activities will take place.

Currently the institution provides smart classes, ground for all field games, Mid-Day meal Scheme, Yoga, Karate, Cubs, Bulbul, Scouts, Guides and gives more importance to the extra culicular activities, which will boost the talent of the students. The school celebrates every festival in the schoo with the students.

Silver Jubilee celebrations

On the occasion of completing 25 years, the management will celebrate the occasion with great grandeur.

On Friday, November 30, in the grand finale, Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, bishop, Diocese of Udupi and president of Catholic Education Society will preside over the event, while, Kota Srinivas Poojary, opposition leader, Karnataka Legislative Council, K Jayaprakash Hedge, former minister, Ragupathi Bhat, MLA Udupi, Fr Baptist Braggs, founder of the school, Fr Victor Fernandes, correspondent, Fr Roshan D’Souza, assistant parish priest, Holy Family church, Ravi Prakash Gonsalves, vice-president, parish pastoral council, Holy Family church, Brahmavar, Saraswathi, president, Grama Panchayat, Chantharu, Lokesh, block educational officer, Brahmavar, Sr Rose Florin D’Souza, superior of Sacred Heart convent, Sr Maria Goretti, superior of Karunalaya Ashrama and Dr Chennakeshava Thunga, alumnus from the first batch, will grace the occasion. There will be a cultural programme presented by the student of the school.

Prior to the grand finale on Thursday, November 29, the jubilee celebrations will be kicked off by hoisting the flag. Fr Victor Fernandes, correspondent, will preside over the function, while Irene Lewis, proprietor, Brahmavar Chemicals, Brahmavar will be the chief guest. This will be followed by the mass drill from the students of the school. Thereafter, thanksgiving Holy Eucharist celebration will be held.

On the evening of Thursday, November 29, formal celebrations will be held and Fr Baptist Braggs, OFM, Cap, founder, Nirmala English Medium School, will inaugurating the jubilee celebrations, while Fr Lawrence D’Souza, secretary, Catholic Educational Soceity, Diocese of Udupi, will preside over the programme. Pramod Madhwaraj, former minister and Sheshashayna Karinja, deputy director of education Department, Brahmavar, Naveen Nayak, president, Varmaballi, gramaPanchyath, Shrikanth K., Circle Inspector, Brahmavar, Sr Mary ZeenaSuvares, Nirmala Convent, Ullala, student of the first batch will be will grace the occasion. During the ceremony, felicitation programme will be held, which will be followed by the cultural programme.
