Mangaluru: Spirits high as action-packed Kambala celebrates victory of rural sport

Mangaluru, Nov 11: The 15th annual Kambala organized by the Koti-Chennaya Jodu Kare Kamabala Samiti, Moodabidri, is being conducted along with the 'Vijayotsava' celebration at Ontikatte, Kadalakere on Saturday, November 11.

Inauguration of the same was done by lighting the lamp by Fr Sunil Veigas, parish priest, Alangar church, Veda Moorthy Eshwara Bhat, administrative mentor, Shree Mahalingeshwara temple and Abdul Rauf, entrepreneur.

Addressing the gathering, Fr Francis Xavier Gomes, parish priest, Mulky church, said "It is really encouraging development to note that 'Kambala' is being celebrated as a feast of all religions. Kambala should get the victory in the lawsuit. A Kambala research centre should come up at Moodabidri due to which the government should provide more facilities and grant to this event."

Kuldeep M of Moodabidri Chowta palace, Abayachandra Jain, MLA and president of the Kambala Samiti, Gunapala kadamba and Bhaskar Kotian, prominent Kambala activists, Sukesh Hegde of pro-kabaddi fame, Harinakshi Suvarna, president, Moodabidri town municipality, Officers of district and Moodabidri Kambala Samiti were present at the occasion.


Time-bound, disciplined Kambala

If the traditional Kambala sport has to survive, the organizers and owners of the Kambala should ensure that the Kambala is conducted in a disciplined and time-bound manner so that all the events are completed within 24 hours. In order for this to happen, the Samiti has taken 17 important decisions and the district Kambala Samiti has agreed to see that the same is followed.

This decision was taken at an emergency meeting that was called on the evening of Friday, November 10, as background to the Vijayostava Kambala, that is taking place on Saturday, November 11. Discussion was done on implementing the decisions of the Samiti and important decisions were taken with the agreement of all those present in the meeting.

K Abhayachandra Jain, MLA and president, Moodabidri Kambala Samiti, Shantharam Shetty Barkur, president, district Kambala Samiti, Bhaskar Kotian, honorary president, Vijaya Kumar Kanginamane, chief secretary, P R Shetty, treasurer, Sukumar Shetty, guide, Keshav Bhandary, vice-president, Vidyadar Jain, Sudeesh Ariga, Gopalkrishna Bhat, Naveen Alva, Srikanth Bhat, Naveem Amburi and several others carrying out their duties at the Kambala were present.
