Mumbai, Apr 23: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday removed Madhu Chavan as its Mumbai unit president whose appointment to the post raised the hackles of its senior leader Gopinath Munde leading to his resignation from all party posts.

"Gopal Shetty has been appointed as Mumbai president in place of him (Madhu Chavan)," state president of BJP Nitin Gadkari said.

Gopal Shetty, M.L.A. from Borivali/Dahisar constituency has the distinction of highest and best victory margin of 52, 773 votes in the city of Mumbai in the oct. 2004, Assembly elections.

Gopal Shetty, had the honour of being the first Dy. Mayor of the first ‘Mayor-in -council’ of the city of Mumbai. His fighting spirit, capacity and tenacity in persuing matters in the Corporation since 1992 leading upto his thumping victory in the Assembly elections of oct. 2004 with a record margin.

Shetty grew from very humble beginnings, born in a poor family & started his public welfare & social work with “Yuak Mandal” Poinsur which was established by him at ayoung age of 14. His struggle for the upliftment of the area got him close to Shri. Ram Naik then M.L.A. Borivali. His small factory & business of auto spare parts did not deter him from his pursuit towards social work & very soon he won his first Municipal Elections in 1992. He still has a very simple livig & his command over Gujarathi, Hindi , Marathi & English along with his mother tongue tulu enabled him to be one with the cosmopolitan citizens & grasp the problems of the common man easily.

Poinsur Gymkhana And Kamla Vihar Sports Club, both institutions developed under the leadership of Shetty, are today the pride and joy of Borivali. In the interest of public health, Shetty aims to build on the same pattern , many other gymkhanas, playgrounds and social welfare centers. He has effectively solved the problems of traffic and pedestrians facing the population of Borivali.He has already played an effective role in co-coordinating the effort of the Railways as well as the MCGM administration, in the creation of the Daulat Nagar fly-over and the sub-way at the Borivali Railway Station. He has always given a high priority in the tasks of road widening and keeping the footpaths free from hawkers. He has also tried consistently to maintain a dialogue between the police and the general public.

In the project for supply of Municipal tap water to the Gorai-Manori region, Shetty Co- ordinated effectively between the Municipal Corporation and the Indian oil. The Mega Water Tunnel Project of Rs.216 crores was cleared by him as DY.Mayor aimed at reducing water shortage of the suburbs from Malad to Dahisar . He was also instrumental in getting post – mortem facilities at the Bhagawati Hospital .

Shetty has been honoured with Best corporator Award in 1997. As group leader of the BJP in the Municipal Corporation and Secretary of the BJP Mumbai region he has made major contributions to the origanizational work in the BJP.

    I know Mr shetty for a long time. He built his career step by step. I am glad to see him as a chief of BJP in Mumbai. Congrats

    Congratulations to Mr.shetty to getting a top party post in mumbai. It is difficult to get any top post in marathi strong hold of mumbai by a south indian. It is the hardworking, honest and adaptation to local culture(yet retaining the native culture) is what given mangaloreans upper hand. We can see that lot of mumbai bolly wood stars travel to mangalore/udupi because of these people. Long live mangaloreans... Hands off to you.
