Mangaluru, Mar 9: "The road from Balmatta Canara Bank circle to Karavali circle in Bendoorwell will be named 'Blasius M D'Souza Road'. The official announcement will be made soon," said MLA J R Lobo on Monday March 9 in the city.

Addressing a press meet at the district Congress office here, J R Lobo said, "For so many years we have tried to achieved this, but due to several reasons the naming was delayed. Now, thanks to the efforts of many people, the state government under the leadership of chief minister Siddaramaiah has made it a reality. I want to thank the DC, the MCC, the police commissioner and the Congress party for their unconditional support."

He further said, "Blasius M D'Souza served as the district president of Congress committee in Dakshina Kannada for several years. He was the founder and patron of Mangaluru Wildlife Trust. He was the member of governing council of Father Muller Charitable Institution.

"He was one of the most successful men born in Mangaluru. Taking note of his work and dedication to society, the state government has decided to honour him by naming the road from Balmatta Canara Bank circle to Karavali circle at Bendoorwell after him. This is a moment of moment for all of us," Lobo said.

Mr. Lobo thanks for your initiative in going further in naming Blasius D'Souza Road who was from my parish Bendur.

My humble request to you is to name Jeppu Circle to Kankanady Circle road as Wilfy Rebimbus Road to respect and honor a Konkani legend of all times. I am sure that you will get cooperation from Police Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and Mangaluru City Corporation to do the needful. May I count on you?

Giving politicians names not a matter..but Blasius name sounds like politics..as i know Mr.Blasius and Mr.Oscar Fernandes they both did nothing for Mangalorens..also for Christians..then why giving them so importance after their death..instead of him better to give Mr..J.R.Lobos name..he is doing lots of good jobs..my fellow Christians don't feel bad or don't get angry with me on my comments..just give reply if iam wrong..God bless you all..

This road should have been named Shankar Alva road long back. He was one of the first Congress MP's and MLA's through whom Janardhan Poojari, Veerappa Moily , Blasius d'souza and others got a break.

I respected Blasius D'Souza during his lifetime. He was a good politician and one could go to him with any legitimate proposition and he would accede to the idea. I had the pleasure of being a Governing Board Member of Father Muller's Hospital along with him and I still recall our pleasant discourses after the meetings at the dinner table. I had the pleasure of proposing his name for the election on one occasion.

I am glad that a road is going to be named after him so that generations may recall and remember his service to The City of Mangalore and the Mangaloreans.

I have noticed in the past, that during the naming of a road, the roads are cleaned, area decorated and speeches are given about the person. After some days and months, the said road becomes such a mess and filthy, that I wonder, was it worth renaming that road. The organisers who are so enthusiastic to rename the road, should ensure that the road is clean in the years to come. However, the people in that area will still refer to it as Balmatta-Bendoorwell road. It is only in the official records, will be known by the new name. This is a general observation and in no way to hurt the feelings of the followers of Blasius D'Souza.

Totally agree with you . Blasius has even sold his house before he passed away then why should they name this road after him . He has not contributed to the society at whole . May be his party workers has gained but not the people of Mangalore.

I knew late Mr. Blasius D’Souza personally and his service/help to the community (irrespective of cast, creed and religion) was being applauded by many. No doubt he was a man of simplicity and down to earth person. He deserves the respect of naming the roads after him. The question is how Sangha Par Ivar will react to this honor ?

Late Mr Blasius D'Souza was indeed a man of great simplicity and has rendered yeomen service to the community and especially to the neighborhood - Bendoor.
He was a very approachable man and has helped thousands .It's indeed a fitting tribute to name the Balmatta - Bendoor well Road after him.

His father Late A.R.D'Souza and late mother were great benefactors of Bendoor parish and were popular with the generation gone by.
